Touted as being the oldest island in the Pacific, its central hills are surrounded by an outer rim of raised coral reef called a makatea, believed to have risen from the ocean in stages over the last two million years and the lagoon inside the fringing coral reef is very narrow and shallow.
Taro swamps are found around the inner edge where water collects between the hills and coral flatlands as well as the central valleys which are the most fertile part of the island and where various crops grow.

The population of Mangaia was 1,235 in 1986, having fallen from about 2,000 in the mid-1970s.
Mangaia has one endemic bird species, the Mangaia Kingfisher (Halcyon ruficollaris), and an endemic subspecies of the Cook Islands Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus kerearako kerearako) discovered as recently as 1973.

Patrick V. Kirch, has yielded a mass of new information on the nature of ecological changes on this central Polynesian island during the past 7,000 years.
The Mangaia Project team has conducted two seasons of inter-disciplinary research on the island, in 1989 and 1991, and the first sets of results are now appearing in various scholarly journals.
Stratigraphic cores in all of the island's alluvial basins have exposed a very detailed sedimentary, geochemical, and pollen record which shows that humans first began having a serious effect on the island's environment about 2500 years BP.

The smaller islands are Mangaia, Atiu, Mauke, Mitiaro, Palmerston, Takutea and Manuae.
The number of native land birds is limited and on Rarotonga, you have to get up into the hills to see them as they have been driven up there by a number of human-related factors, including changes in the natural vegetation.
Of particular interest are the cave-dwelling Atiu on the island of Atiu, the chattering kingfisher of Atiu and Mauke and the Mangaia kingfisher.
