The project (raising the height of the dam by 30 feet) which will be completed in 5-year at a cost of Rs.60 billion will bring about a revolution in the agriculture sector of the country as it will provide about 3 million area feet additional irrigation water.

ISLAMABAD: The Mangla Joint Venture has taken effective remedial measures to overcome the delay in completing the Mangla dam raising project, Wapda said while briefing Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on the project here on Saturday.
A senior official while quoting the Wapda presentation told The News that the Mangla Joint Venture is responsible for completing the project as per schedule and the sub-contractors, who had refused to continue work on the agreed rates, have started working speedily to offset the expected delay of six month to one year.
He said work on the site is in full swing and because of the seedy work the delay in implementation of the project would be nominal.

Muzaffarabad: Payment of Mangla Dam royalty to AJK government by Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) would be de-linked from payment of electricity bills by the former to the latter, AJK electricity department spokesman said here on Saturday.
The decision, according to the spokesman, was taken at a meeting between AJK chief secretary and chairman Wapda which was also attended by the secretary, the chief engineer, the director general of AJK electricity department, managing director AJK Hydro Electric Board (HEB), director general AJK private power cell and representatives of the finance department.
The spokesman said the Wapda chief also promised that Khuiratta grid station would be completed on priority basis to rid the consumers in Kotli district of electricity problems.

In its alert-bulletin on the environmental catastrophe, the IUCN said rivers Kunhar, Neelum and Jhelum and their various tributaries are the most affected by the earthquake caused silting.
"They (rivers) are carrying this load downstream to the Mangla reservoir, greatly increasing the risk of silting this already silted dam, and reducing the life and capacity of this reservoir."
The IUCN is also alarmed at the degradation of forests in the affected areas observing, "The need for shelter and fuel for hundreds of thousands of affected people have put the already depleted forests in the region under a potential threat.

The fish culture activity under WAPDA is confined to two small hatchery units at Mangla and Tarbela with a total pond surface of 0.51 ha and 0.45 ha respectively.
