  Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993)
The emphasis on the murder investigation meant that we learned less about the participants than we might have liked; they all got decent exposition but not enough to make them really come to life.
Murder offered a fairly comic mystery, and it could be moderately witty and entertaining at times.

"Manhattan Murder Mystery" is Woody Allen's first flat-out comedy in years, and he's taken care to pack it very tightly with loads of laughs and even works in some effective suspense.
"Manhattan Murder Mystery" provides her with what is unquestionably the best showcase for her comic talents in years — perhaps since her old Woody Allen days.
The murder mystery is also clever, with quite a few unexpected twists and turns, resolved in a logical, if somewhat complicated manner.

This is the kind of plot you might expect on "Murder, She Wrote." In the hands of Woody Allen, in his new comedy, "Manhattan Murder Mystery," what happens is more or less what would happen in a 1930s novel about an amateur detective.
Obviously, this guy murdered his wife and is going to run off with his bit of fluff on the side.
Allen has been called a filmmaker whose subject is Manhattan first and the world second, if at all, and certainly the situation in "Manhattan Murder Mystery" is one that any high-rise apartment dweller (like Allen himself) will naturally identify with.

Manhattan Murder Mystery also reunites Allen with writer Marshall Brickman (the two share screenwriting credit here as they did on Annie Hall and Manhattan).
While it is true that there's a murder mystery in the Welles film, the two movies are completely mismatched.
To deflect her advances, Woody sets her up with Alan Alda because deep down he really loves his wife and he doesn't want to mess that up, although the movie plays with the notion that the two are growing bored with each other—that they might both be attracted to other people.

Manhattan Murder Mystery follows a couple (Woody Allen and Diane Keaton, seen before in Annie Hall) whose kid has left for college and are now living their lives out on the Upper West Side.
Although Allen is trepidatious about confronting a murder at first, the bland urban lives of Allen, his wife, his wife's friend (Alda), and the writer Allen edits (Houston), get caught up in the Manhattan murder mystery offered before them.
For instance, the title Manhattan Murder Mystery alludes to the film Manhattan, and you have the wonderfully brilliant scene in which Diane Keaton decrys wearing a tie with a skirt: the very look that became chic in 1977 with her role in Annie Hall.

In Manhattan Murder Mystery, Allen and Diane Keaton star as an aging married couple living a comfortable life.
Keaton is great as usual (has she ever delivered a bad performance?) and even someone like Alan Alda, who doesn't exactly have the greatest track record, delivers an effective performance as a sleazy friend with eyes for Keaton.
Manhattan Murder Mystery, while not Allen's best film (that's still Annie Hall), is a worthwhile addition to his filmography and certainly warrants a rental.

Allen's films tended to be shot handheld for a span of two or three years in 1992-1994, and this movie is jarred by several clumsy movements that constantly remind the viewer they are watching a movie, not getting engrossed in a "murder mystery".

Part of the fun of Manhattan Murder Mystery is guessing whether or not Lillian House was murdered, as Carol believes, or simply died of a heart attack.
In a sense, that's the mystery of the film, and Woody Allen brings across the solution with his characteristic mix of madcap comedy and on-target realism.
Manhattan Murder Mystery is closer to a straightforward comedy, providing more laughs than anything Allen has done in a while (he claims to have "indulged" himself with this movie).

For all the giddy romantic fun, Mystery is a strange hybrid -- a love story that opens with a reference to a Bob Hope comedy and ends with a clip from Orson Welles' Lady From Shanghai, a film noir about betrayal in love.
Mystery was shot last summer at the height of Allen's ugly custody battle with Mia Farrow, who was set to play Carol.
Better to see Manhattan Murder Mystery for what it is: Annie Hall replayed in a minor key by a filmmaker who sees the comedy, tragedy and transience of love and can't stop playing the game.

'Manhattan Murder Mystery' was the first Woody Allen film I saw, and quite admittedly, I was about to refuse to view more Woody Allen films after that because the lighting and the irregular effects was enough to bore me. But, as the movie deepened, I found myself being wrapped up into the plot.
This movie is basically about a bored, restless Manhattan housewife (Diane Keaton) who suspects her next-door neighbor just committed a murder and is sniffing around.
The murder itself is mildly suspenseful, but that's barely the point with a W-Allen movie.

DVD Breakdown | Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993)
The brisk, assured and hugely funny Manhattan Murder Mystery was made at a strange point in Allen's career, having been made just after the hugely publicized break-up with Mia Farrow (which was itself documented so brilliantly in Allen's previous film Husbands and Wives).
The murder mystery plot had originally been part of the screenplay he wrote for Annie Hall, making the casting of Diane Keaton (a last-minute replacement for Farrow) all the more apt.
But within his collection of movies that are simply funny and endearing for their own sake, Manhattan Murder Mystery ranks among the best.

The reunion of Keaton and Allen only improves this already enjoyable Allen comedy, since they're so comfortable with each other's neuroses that they're delightfully convincing as a married couple who suspect their neighbor of murdering his wife.
Reunited once again with Diane Keaton, Woody Allen plays a typical Manhattan milquetoast whose somewhat kooky wife is obsessed with the idea that an elderly neighbor might be a murderer.
Complicating the plot somewhat are the strains that Woody and Diane's characters feel on their longime marriage.

 Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993)
Manhattan Murder Mystery is like an updated version of Hitchcock’s Rear Window with neurotic people undergoing mid-life crises instead of glossy Hollywood stars letting their imaginations get the better of them.
This is not a bad thing, however, and makes for a highly enjoyable movie as the neurosis feeds the paranoia which in turn feeds the tension of the thriller aspect of the movie, and all of this plays incredibly well against the comedy factor.
Given that the R4 release is more multi-culturally friendly, and is not limited by the NTSC format, and I am a stickler for original aspect ratios, I am giving this to R4.
