Manhattan, Kansas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Manhattan is the county seat of Riley County.
Manhattan was settled in April 1855 by the abolitionist Isaac Goodnow [1] and other New England settlers travelling to Kansas Territory under the auspices of the New England Emigrant Aid Company.
Early Manhattan settlers were harrassed by Native Americans and the town itself was threatened by pro-slavery Southerners, but the proximity of Fort Riley protected the settlement from the major violence visited upon other Free State towns during the "Bleeding Kansas" era.

Talk:Manhattan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Manhattan has a concept of "north on the grid" (of streets), which is different from due north (or magnetic north, for that matter).
Since Manhattan North is approximately 29 degrees east of north, the sunset azimuth to align with the grid would be approximately 299 degrees (since 270 is due west by convention, with values increasing clockwise).
According to the census bureau, Manhattan population reached a peak in 1910 with 2,762,522 inhabitants, and then decreased to 2,284,103 in 1920 and 1,698,281 in 1960.
