The Manhunters are a fictional 'race' of robot warriors that exists within the universe of DC Comics.
The Manhunters were the first attempt of the Guardians of the Universe to create an interstellar police force that would combat evil all over the galaxy.
The Manhunters were discovered by the Justice League and seemingly defeated, and one of their human pawns, Mark Shaw, adopted a new identity as the costumed hero, The Privateer.

In his introduction to the Manhunter book-an introduction he wrote 20 years ago for an early reprinting-he talked about how instead of being a fan of the major characters back when he was a kid, he wanted to be the Green Lama, and second banana characters like that.
The reader has to flip back and forth through the comic, because Doom and Reed were jumping around fighting through time, and I laid the book out in a way that made the reader jump around through the comic in order to follow their fight.
Comics is mainly a short form of entertainment in America; we've got 22 pages a month, and that isn't much room, less than a prose short story so you use a lot of symbols to communicate information in a fast, effective way, as a shortcut to meaning.

I got the notion this weekend to read all the Martian Manhunter stories in Detective, starting with #225, the comic some feel marks the beginning of the Silver Age.
The next few panels are full of the perhaps excessive and certainly amusing belief in science that was to typify DC comics for the entire Silver Age.
For some reason, J'onnz like to race people by burrowing through the ground underneath them--he did this in #260, #274, #278 and elsewhere.
