Manhunter (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Manhunter (1986; see also 1986 in film) is a film based on Thomas Harris' novel Red Dragon.
After The Silence of the Lambs (which was never approached by Orion as a sequel to Manhunter due to said box office failure) was released in 1991, it experienced something of a revival on video and later as a DVD release.
When the film was first broadcast on TV, the title was changed to Red Dragon: The Pursuit of Hannibal Lecter.

THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- MANHUNTER
MANHUNTER ($25) is the film that introduced the movie going public to the character of Dr. Hannibal Lecter (spelled Lektor here) and there has been some debate as to which incarnation of "Hannibal the Cannibal" is best.
MANHUNTER is based upon the novel by Thomas Harris, which tells the story of Will Graham (William L. Petersen), the physically and emotionally scarred FBI profiler who captured Lektor and almost lost his life in the process.
MANHUNTER is a solid and very entertaining thriller that is enhanced by director Michael Mann’s stylized visuals, which are reminiscent of the TV show MIAMI VICE that Mann executive produced.

Manhunter is presented in its original theatrical screen aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and, despite the proclamation on the DVD cover slick stating otherwise, it is not anamorphic.
To simulate the darkness and lend to the scene a disturbing quality, Mann films it with the aid of colour filters, so that it appears as though the interior of the house is bathed in an eerie, incandescent blue glow.
Though dated in some aspects, the metallic synthesised film score provided by The Reds and Michel Rubin is suitably atmospheric and is a fundamental element in the generation of Manhunter’s tension.

But films truely need to be reviewed on their own merrits and this film is no different.
This film, due to it's wanting to tell a story in the style of a police drama has left out a lot of gore and even the possibility of gore.
The best part of the film is probably the home movies of the families of one of the victims as it contains a beautiful young woman nicely dressed in her bikini.

MANHUNTER was followed by Jonathan Demme's THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, also based on a Thomas Harris novel.

There is a fascinating sequence concerning dusting a victim’s eyes for fingerprints and another in which the experts scan a handwritten note from the killer, using infrared lasers to pick up details invisible to the human eye.
The release of Manhunter on a limited edition DVD is meant to coincide with Ridley Scott’s Hannibal, the long anticipated sequel to Jonathan Demme’s eerie Silence of the Lambs.
Manhunter lacks catchy one-liners about eating someone's liver with fava beans and a nice chianti (fh-fh-fh-fh), nor does it present cold blooded psychopaths as pop culture icons befitting a t-shirt.

Written and directed by Michael Mann and released in 1986, "Manhunter" is that rarest of films, one that builds a large cult following despite a lack of both studio and critical support.
In "Manhunter," the killer that Petersen is pursuing is played by Tommy Noonan, a lean 6-foot-7-inch character actor who, with his damaged lip and scraggly white hair, looks like a brain-damaged former NBA center.
Mann leaves almost all of the film's horrific crimes to the imagination (the one exception is the flaming demise of one character, one of the truly spectacular murders in recent movie history).

Michael Mann's films on DVD typically aren't loaded with extras because, the director prefers the focus to be on the film itself.
It's a fairly entertaining supplement for fans, as the actors discuss making the film, how they prepared for their role, and what it was like working with Mann.

Some people are just happier when films aren’t so successful or so mainstream as in the case of Manhunter…a film that takes many liberties with the original text (Harris’ Red Dragon) and in my opinion fails rather miserably on many levels (despite in the end being an average film).
Manhunter is the story of former FBI agent Will Graham who is asked by his former cohorts to work on the case of the “Tooth Fairy” who has to date gruesomely stalked and murdered two families.
Manhunter is the rather straightforward story of a creative investigator hot on the trail of a crazy killer.

Many of the films I give 10/10 to came out then (or I first saw around that time) and I still love tehm today - amongst them were "Aliens" and "The Silence of the Lambs".
"Manhunter" suffers from a lower budget and less skilled filmmaking with nowhere near as memorable characters and a decent but not particularly engaging tale.
This is an 80's film which hasn't been remastered so the quality is expectedly not so great - Lecter's scenes suffer from some grain whilst most of the daylight scenes are a bit soft and washed out.

Rafik Djoumi notes,"if Manhunter still surprises today, it is most of all because of its aesthetic bias." Seen one way, the disjuncture between the menacing, noir subject matter and the bright, flashy visual style contributes to the film's general failure.
At its core, Manhunter is a film about the identification of the protagonist, FBI profiler Will Graham (William Petersen), with the film's serial killer, Francis Dollarhyde (Tom Noonan).
The plot of Manhunter is driven by Graham's attempt to create an empathic bond with the killer in order to understand his "dream" or the fantasy that drives his killing.

Even worse, there is an imposter film out there entitled Red Dragon (some call it a remake, others say it is "closer" to the original material), with an all star cast but helmed by the most pedestrian of directors.
Since Red Dragon sports Anthony Hopkins, it now makes Manhunter look like the imposter and that is a shame because Manhunter is probably one of the best and maybe one of the most overlooked films of the 80`s.

Now this segment, i like to call it the second act since it slowed the pace of the film down incredibly, is not totally trash, we learn that the killer has feelings too, and we also kinda learn why he does what he does, and how he see's himself himself doing them.
Because in Manhunter he is in an all white building with a white cell and white walls and a white guard with white clothing, all too eerie.
I think that Manhunter could have been a film all its own, without having to be tied down by the limitations of Lector and the needance of room for sequals.

Manhunter Film Review - Time Out Film
The plot is complex and ingenious: FBI forensics expert Will Graham (Peterson), blessed (and tormented) by an ability to fathom the workings of the criminal mind through psychic empathy, is brought back from voluntary retirement to track down a serial killer, the 'Tooth Fairy'.
Focused on the anxiety and confusion of the hunter rather than his psychotic prey, the film functions both as a disturbing examination of voyeurism, and as an often almost unbearably grim suspenser.
Mann creates a terrifying menacing atmosphere without resorting to graphic depiction of the seriously nasty killings: music, designer-expressionist 'Scope photography, and an imaginative use of locations, combine with shots of the aftermath of the massacres to evoke a world nightmarishly perceived by Graham's haunted sensibility.

I realize the film was remaining more or less faithful to the novel and that, under its guidance, Hannibal had to remain cell-bound.
I understand that at least one element from the book that was cut from the film- a flashback to Lecter's childhood, showing the tragic and horrific circumstances where he was first introduced to cannibalism- is going to be a part of the upcoming Hannibal Lecter prequel film, so that's cool at least...
The funny thing is, as much as I love MANHUNTER, I wasn't at all against remaking RED DRAGON the book, since I'd also read the book and loved it, and wanted to see what a different filmmaker might bring to it if he or she stayed closer to the book...

Manhunter was made before Lambs, and the action also takes place earlier.
Manhunter is in many respects a more interesting story than Lambs, because it features a killer who is much more like Dr Lecter himself.

Manhunter is an exceptionally well-photographed film: Mann's regular cinematographer Dante Spinotti created sparse, elegantly framed, often mono-chromatically lit compositions which are essential to the shifting psychological moods.
Manhunter never packs the sheer excitement of Lambs, nevertheless, it is a powerful and compelling thriller which remains far superior to the third instalment in the series, Hannibal (2001).

I know Manhunter is somewhat dated and has a very 80s feel to it, but this was a very well-done, creepy film with decent acting and decent directing.
In Manhunter, Michael Mann's direction of the novel Red Dragon shows a far different approach to the Lecter-type characterization in the later terrorizing cinemas such as Silence of the Lambs-another one of Thomas Harris' novels-turned-movies.
The film's strongest points are in its direction and music score, which both add great depth to achieve the suspense and horror of Harris' original novel.
