  Mani Peninsula
The Mani is the central peninsula of the three which extend southwards from the Peloponnese in southern Greece.
In 1249 the Mani was occupied by the Venetians, who made it one of the twelve baronies of the Principality of Moreas and built the fortresses of Mystras, Passavas, Gustema (Beaufort) and Megali Maini.
The Mani's local autonomy was abolished in 1870, and the area gradually became a backwater as the inhabitants abandoned the land through emigration.

Administratively, Mani is divided between the prefectures of Laconia (Kato Mani, Mesa Mani) and Messenia (Exo Mani), in the periphery of Peloponnesos, but in ancient times it lay entirely within Laconia, the district dominated by Sparta.
Mani is also known for probably the world's best extra-virgin olive oil, soft-pressed from partially ripened olives of the Koroneiki variety that are organically grown on mountain terraces.
Many inhabitants are still working as olive farmers, and thus many of the winter months are devoted to the olive harvest.

Mani Madness (1 of 4), Greece Travel Stories | BootsnAll Articles
The outstanding feature of the Mani peninsula, also known as Lakonia (the middle 'finger' of the Peloponnese), is an abundance of medieval Byzantine and Venetian fortified towns with tall stone defensive towers, set in a barren stony landscape of rugged mountains, dramatic rocky shores and with a history that dates back to the Neolithic period.
The Southern Mani, which lies south of Areopoli, is hot and bare, and although the mountains are lower, the coast itself is stark and often edged by sheer cliffs.
This is a sparsely populated land, many of its villages and towers abandoned to the ghosts.
