It's easy to forget how important Manic Miner is, but if you mention the ZX Spectrum to anyone under 40 in the UK the chances are they'll say either Manic Miner or its sequel Jet Set Willy The reason for this is simple.
All we'd had at home in the platform genre before this was Pitfall and although Mario was already in his third incarnation in the arcades he couldn't yet come close to Manic Miner.
Despite Manic Miner being right at the start of the 8-bit computing era and the advancements that came after, Manic Miner remains the game that defines that age.

Miner 2049'er.... Do you think it inspired Matthew Smith? - AtariAge Forums
Miner 2049er is sort of a platformer Pac Man style game; you "claim" each mining station (level) by walking over every inch of floor space, your progress denoted by patterns in each section of the floor turning solid as you walk over them.
Manic Miner and kin are all jumping platformers where you have to roam about collecting all the various objects scattered on each screen.
I remember reading that Manic Miner was supposedly based on Miner 2049'er (in Stuart Campbell's top 100 games in Your Sinclair), but if that's the case then Matt Smith took the word 'Miner' and not much else.

In a good game, the difficulty should be cleverly implemented through good level design whilst still allowing the player to feel that he has comfortable control of the game.
The difficulty in Manic Miner is implemented in the cheapest and crappest way possible: by putting obstacles in the player's way that you have to be at EXACTLY the correct pixel position to jump over.
Maybe with a few more shuffles as you went a tiny bit further into the level just out of sheer bloody-mindedness, because you were a Spectrum owner and you HAD to make out this was actually fun, and not a horribly futile exercise in bitter frustration.
