Although the Manics' critical reputation was restored and James was playing with the band, even giving numerous interviews with the press, all was not well.
Indeed, the Manics were one of the key bands of the early \'90s, and their career didn\'t get rolling until 1991.

Manic Street Preachers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Manic Street Preachers (often known colloquially as "The Manics") are a Welsh rock band often associated with the Britpop scene, and were one of the biggest bands in Britain for a period in the late 1990s.
The Manics aesthetic - especially in these early days - also strongly embraced a philosophy of sell out as freedom and liberation, that by exerting absolute freedom of will and by being honest about your past, present and future, mistakes and all, double standards and broken promises were nothing to be ashamed of.
Ironically enough, the fans loved the band for the very things that they were condemned for by the press, with Nicky saying in later years that their manipulation of the media was "the greatest thing we ever did".

The night before missing Manic Street Preacher vibes Richey Edwards disappeared, joker guitarist Nicky Wire had set everyone's clocks forward by seven hours as a prank.
However, Richey didn't like the symbolising of time passing and so due to not actually owning a timepeace himself, he was the only one with any idea of what time it actually was - and subsequently was the only one on board the flight to America for their tour the next day.
The Manic Street Preachers are currently involved in a lawsuit with Atari Teenage Riot's Alec Empire, who they accuse of directly lifting the keywords from their website and using as song lyrics for his latest single 'Nazi Elvis'.

For all their deliberate effort to antagonize and shock, the Manic Street Preachers came at the British charts in the early '90s with a strongly traditional pop sound — which they quickly outgrew.
Right before the UK was overrun by copyists, revivalists and dated attitude- mongers, the Manic Street Preachers made it their mission to update the great rock'n'roll swindle for a clientele that considered the Clash and Sex Pistols golden oldtimers.
Making grim and pretentious use of music that betrays no imagination at all, the Manic Street Preachers come off a lot like their name: unfocused, didactic and too lost in their own world to convince anyone of anything.

Whether the Manics feel that they’re going to be remembered for their weaker material it’s hard to say, but there’s certainly a sense that they’re trying to be true to their younger selves.
Wire felt that perhaps the Manics needed to reveal their lighter side, but in this case most will be laughing at them rather than with.
As with any other Manics record, there’s a lot of lyrical content to be investigated if you’re that way inclined, but more importantly, they still know how to conjure up a compelling series of songs.

They were the sound of the 1990s, but Manic Street Preachers fell below the radar in recent years.
MSP released three albums as a four-piece, and after Richey's disappearance in 1995, it looked like they were going to call it a day.
They were immediately propelled into the mainstream - and inevitably the Britpop movement - but unlike many other bands from that time, the Manics managed to ride the scene's demise in the latter part of the decade and came out the other side intact.

NME has learned to anticipate new Manic Street Preachers albums with the same dread and suspicion with which one might look forward to a colonoscopy.
Concise and focused, bristling with political ire and with unabashedly lowbrow salutes to the trio’s guiltiest musical pleasures (Guns N’Roses, Aerosmith, ELO for fuck’s sake), the Manics are far healthier-sounding than any band on their eighth album and third decade of existence has any right to.
From the off, it’s clear that Manics have rediscovered the element of “fabulous disaster” that was lost in the safety bubble of mainstream success, and the genuine shock of how brilliant it all sounds is weirdly disarming.

Instead of being the return to form it was clearly intended to be, Manic Street Preachers' sixth album, Know Your Enemy, sucked the life out of the band, collapsing in a heap of bad reviews and ill will.
When the music hit harder, Wire's words made more sense and Bradfield's singing tugged on the heartstrings, but with music as slick and seamless as this, they seem a touch anachronistic, the lone holdovers from when the band lived with abandon, giving their music an invigorating, reckless edge even when it was incoherent.
But growing up was never going to be easy for the Manics -- they were either going to break up, embarrassingly ape their former glories (which they came perilously close to doing on Know Your Enemy), or they were going to deliberately, somberly enter adulthood, as they do here.
