The number of secondary schools in both Harare and Manicaland represent 21% of all secondary schools in the country, the enrolments 28% and Forms 1 to 3 also 28% of the country's Forms 1 to 3 enrolments.
In Manicaland more students in the higher form (Form 3, 61.1%) were not refused compared to the lower form (Form 1, 37.0%).
About half the students from Manicaland and only a third from Harare, had discussed the effects of smoking in a class, and even less had discussed the reasons why young people smoked, 28% from Harare and 38% from Manicaland.

At a time when Zimbabwe is facing an acute fuel shortage, senior government officials and other well-connected individuals have received huge amounts of heavily subsidised fuel from the National Oil Company of Zimbabwe (Noczim), raising fears the fuel could have been diverted to the thriving fl market.
He said that it was Manicaland acting area public prosecutor, Levison Chikafu, and himself, who had called for the probe.
Manicaland Provincial spokesperson Inspector Joshua Tigere confirmed that investigations into the fuel scam were in progress.

The environment in Manicaland province was similar to experiences of Mashonaland West in that the settlers have been allocated a certain portion on the farm under mainly the A2 scheme and are not necessarily interfering with the activities on the farm.
In Manicaland province, the unemployed farm workers are in dire need of food aid because they no longer have any alternative source of income with which to sustain themselves.
In Manicaland province while the number of employed permanent farm workers are close to those living on the farm, statistics point to the fact that some permanent workers live off the farm.

In a sermon, Bishop Sebastian Bakare, the head of the Anglican Church's Manicaland diocese and president of the Zimbabwe Council of Churches, paid tribute to the two missionaries, "who refused to be chaplains of an evil regime that practised discrimination and denial of human rights to fl people".
Lamont, who was once the head of the country's Roman Catholic Bishops' Conference and of the church in Manicaland, died in Dublin, Ireland, on 14 August.
This was a violation of the regime's anti-terrorist laws, and as a result, Lamont was convicted and sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment with hard labour for "aiding terrorists".

In a case study in Manicaland, Zimbabwe, we found that children who had lost their mothers at an early age were less likely to have completed primary school than other children but that the reverse was true for paternal orphans.
These results remained valid even after controlling for other factors that influence primary school completion,including child’s sex and age, economic status of household, and characteristics of household head.
In an in-depth study of the extended family system in Manicaland, we identified factors that support the education of paternal orphans and reduce the school chances of maternal orphans.

JOHANNESBURG, 9 Jun 2003 (IRIN) - Most households in Zimbabwe's province of Manicaland are expected to exhaust their grain reserves by July, the latest World Food Programme (WFP) situation report has warned.
In March, WFP provided relief food for over 830,000 people in the province which borders Mozambique but, instead of recovering at harvest time, severe drought and an invasion of army worms left many communities still vulnerable.
"Parts of Manicaland have suffered from almost total crop failure," WFP spokeswoman Makena Walker told IRIN on Monday.

When Human Rights Watch visited the town of Rusape in Manicaland province in December 2004, MDC supporters reported that they were unable to wear MDC regalia in the town centre of Rusape and surrounding rural areas, and that ZANU PF youth and supporters routinely forced them to attend ZANU PF rallies and public meetings.
Human Rights Watch interviewed a number of local activists in Mashonaland, Manicaland, Chitungwiza and Harare who stated that people who lived in the areas were also subjected to questioning whenever they visited other parts of the country especially the cities.
Local human rights activists informed Human Rights Watch that in parts of Manicaland and Mashonaland, those who were labeled as MDC were sometimes forced from their rural homes by ZANU PF supporters or ended up losing their jobs due to intimidation from ruling party supporters and members.

But the party has been less successful in Manicaland, allegedly due to Mutasa, who is also feared within the police force in the area.
There is a documented case against him where, in 2005 he slapped a senior police officer at his house for not toeing the line.

In their latest attempts to win the March 31 parliamentary election in Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Africa National Union-Patriotic Front (Zanu-PF) candidates have resorted to politicising the scarcely available grain in the country to starve suspected opposition supporters into submission.
The opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Manicaland spokesperson, Pishai Muchauraya, said the politicisation of food has intensified with the Zanu-PF card being used as a licence to buy maize from the GMB.
Zanu-PF candidates for Manicaland include ministers Joseph Made and Didymus Mutasa as well as former Central Intelligence Organisation boss Shadreck Chipanga.
