Jello Biafra Petition.com - KEEP THE DEAD KENNEDYS MUSIC ON ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES RECORDS
On October 1, 1998 the Dead Kennedys (Decay Records) notified Jello Biafra and Alternative Tentacles Records that the Dead Kennedys would be terminating their business relationship with Alternative Tentacles Records, and that the Dead Kennedys would be changing record labels.
The concept behind DIY is that musicians are able to start record labels and distribute their own music without conforming to the restrictions of a major record label.
Alternative Tentacles Records is an excellent example of a DIY record label, started by the Dead Kennedys in 1978 to put out their first self-produced single, California Uber Alles.

Records are too expensive and their price is a SCANDAL, with no relation to the real cost.
This is valid in both senses: we will not be concerned with the hypothetical legal source of the content of our records and we will not question in any case its future use in other contexts (nevertheless we will be grateful if it's quoted).
However we warn that for the same reason for which we will not be concerned with the legal source of our records, we won't respond to third parties that believe in having rights over the ideas contained in them nor to judicial decisions over same.

To date, we have released more than 100 records, and our bands have toured the world and been covered by every major music outlet in the US (and many overseas).
The point of all this self-congratulatory claptrap is not to brag, but to establish the fact that even though you may have never heard of us, we are a viable and growing label.
Radio is controlled through payola (or its modern form, consultants), the print media is controlled through quid pro quo agreements (ads for coverage and vice-versa), retail is controlled by co-op dollars (which also includes in-store play for videos), and they even buy their artists way on to opening slots on tours.

There are seven Manifesto releases in all, the core of which includes a single disc compiling all of 1981's In God We Trust, Inc. and 1982's Plastic Surgery Disasters, 1985's Frankenchrist, 1986's Bedtime for Democracy and 1987's Give Me Convenience of Give Me Death.
Like Lenny Bruce, the Dead Kennedys were artists first, with the primary reward of such a pursuit being the knowledge that your message has been passed on to others, and the ultimate satisfaction being that your influence is felt in the ongoing evolution of the art.
By pushing boundaries to the point of persecution, the DKs were martyrs for the cause; Manifesto's reissues provide essential documentation, an opportunity for case study, and a chance for the band to finally earn a couple of bucks for their trouble.
