Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has urged New Delhi to declare the continuing separatist insurgencies in the northeast as a national problem and adopt a holistic approach to the tackle the region's conflicts.
According to Sarkar, the success of peace talks with two of the most influential separatist groups in the region - the outlawed National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) and the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) - could have a bearing on the overall insurgency scenario in the region.
Sarkar said Tripura rebels have training camps in the Moulovi Bazar and Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) areas in Bangladesh that shares a 856 km long border with the state.

Mr Sarkar told newsmen here that the State’s border with Sylhet district and Chittagong hill tracts of Bangladesh was "very vulnerable" and easiest for the militants to increase cross border movements.
Mr Sarkar said Tripura is the only State in the country which openly declared that the Centre might talk to the militants without consulting the State Government and the outlawed extremists outfits also can hold talks with the Union Government.
Sarkar said, Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani was satisfied with the security deployment by the State Government and such a remark would not help people of the State to fight against insurgency because it was completely partisan in nature.

Manik Sarkar, during his visit to New Delhi on the eve of Independence Day, urged the Centre to declare insurgency a national problem.
Sarkar sought an increase in the number of Border Security Force (BSF) battalions posted in the State and suggested that the government fence the entire Indo-Bangladesh border to prevent militants from taking shelter in the neighbouring country.
Manik Sarkar told Frontline that underground insurgent groups such as the NLFT and the ATTF were among the several rebel groups from the region that had set up camps in Bangladesh.

Agartala, Sept. 8: Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar has criticised the Bangladesh foreign minister for denying the presence of Northeast militant camps on its soil.
Sarkar, who was addressing a convention of employees at Rabindra Bhawan today, said his government had specific information on the existence of more than 50 camps of Tripura militants in Bangladesh.
Sarkar said Bangladesh police had killed and arrested several Northeast militants recently and the media, too, had covered the developments.

Sarkar claimed a tribal guerrilla group, backed by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), was behind the terrorist killing of 18 non-tribals at a weekly mart in Panchabati village in the West Tripura district on Sunday.
Sarkar’s Left Front government on Tuesday observed a total strike to protest the rise in terrorism and what it called New Delhi’s failure to respond to its request for security reinforcements.
