The Manila Trench is an ocean trench in the South China Sea, west of the Philippines.
It is created by subduction, in which the Eurasian Plate is slipping underneath the Philippine Plate.
The Manila Trench is associated with frequent earthquakes, and the plate movements which give rise to it are also responsible for the arc of volcanoes on the west side of the Philippine island of Luzon, including Mount Pinatubo.

MANILA -- Two moderate earthquakes rocked the Philippines early Monday, but no damage or injuries were reported, seismologists said.
The two earthquakes were not powerful enough to cause tsunamis and were not linked to Sunday's undersea Asian earthquake of epic power that sent huge deadly walls of water crashing down on beaches in eight countries, killing more than 20,000 people.
The quake, caused by the movement of the Manila Trench, had a preliminary magnitude of 4.7, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology research specialist Ric Mangao said.

The Magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Metro Manila is not a prediction but a SCENARIO that is useful for urban planning and formulation of disaster mitigation strategies.
The estimates of damage and casualties are based on empirical observations worldwide, considering population, number of buildings, construction practices, etc. They are very rough estimates, but they do indicate what we've expected all along: damage and casualty CAN be very high, especially considering that the metropolis is host to 14 million people.
In support of MMEIRS, the Metro Manila Council has adopted a resolution “declaring the commitment to make Metro Manila seismically safe, and establishing the mutual aid agreement among the local government units of Metro Manila in the event of disasters”.
