 Research in Zimbabwe
Although there were many interesting potential projects on the ecology of lizards in Zimbabwe, opportunities for physiological research were limited; previous work of John Loveridge (Professor of Zoology) and others had been on animals much smaller (insects) or larger (crocodiles) than lizards.
Some of these animals had been kept in a large outdoor enclosure for many years (indeed many of the leopard tortoises were captive bred).
The mean prey mass was about 0.2% of body mass, which appears small but is in fact similar to that of many insectivorous lizards.

Maliehe (1993) list the scrub hare Lepus saxatilis; cape hare L. capensis, porcupine Hystrix africae australis, the polecat Ictonyx striatus and the pangolin Manis temminckii as animals whose body parts are used in traditional medicine in South Africa.
The effectiveness of most of the medicines from wild animals/wild animal parts has not been scientifically studied and proven and their potency in many cases may be questionable.
In some cases, it is easy to comprehend why people would believe in the curative powers of certain preparations e.g., the use of faecal pellets of herbivorous animals which feed on plant species that are known to have medicinal properties.

In the course of following the pangolins at night, Jonathan saw many leopards, some of which seemed fascinated by his presence and followed him around, showing no signs of aggression.
Jonathan is now looking at how much energy a pangolin expends in its daily life, by injecting animals with a small amount of radioactively labelled water, and then taking blood samples at regular intervals to see how fast the pangolins use up the hydrogen and oxygen in the water.
