 Heartwood Alerts
This National Forest is one of the most cutover National Forests I have seen and to increase the allowable sale quantity will only harm the area.
In fact, it is fast becoming a popular destination for many people in the Midwest for activities such as camping, backpacking, hiking, fishing, hunting, skiing, snowshoeing, nature photography, etc. Along with conducting assessments for roadless and Wilderness values, the Forest Service should also analyze lands for potential National Recreation Areas.
A large number of secondary forests in the Huron-Manistee have not been cut since the early 1900's and are now starting to obtain some old-growth characteristics.

A pair of Kirtland's warblers requires at least eight acres of young jack pine forest to nest, but usually needs 30 to 40 acres to raise a nest of young.
Today, Kirtland's warbler faces two significant threats: lack of crucial young jack pine forest habitat and the parasitic cowbird.
Its exacting nesting habitat requirements, as well as cowbird parasitism, caused a drastic decline in its numbers and led the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list the Kirtland's warbler as an endangered species in 1973.

User evaluation of campgrounds on two Michigan National Forests.
Abstract: Campground use on the Huron and Manistee National Forests in Michigan was studied in relation to resource characteristics, location, facilities provided, and visitor attitudes about the environment.
Resource quality ratings made earlier as part of a nationwide Forest Service recreation resource inventory did not agree with visitors' ratings and had little relation to use variations.
Overall resource quality ratings by visitors were most associated with their judgment of general environmental quality (essentially scenery).
