Albay is also the region's principal transshipment point with its ports: Tabaco International, Legazpi National, Pio Duran Provincial, and the Pantao Regional Port (under construction in 2003).
Most of Albay is located on mainland Bicol Peninsula and it has four major islands to the east: Rapu-Rapu, Batan (part of Rapu-Rapu), Cagraray (part of Bacacay), and San Miguel (part of Tabaco City).
Albay and its surrounding areas were known as Ibalon when Juan de Salcedo and 120 soldiers explored it in 1573.

From Manila, Albay is approximately 13 to 13.5 degrees north latitude and 123.25 to 124.25 degrees east longtitude.
It is bounded by Lagonoy Gulf and the province of Camarines Sur in the northwest, the Pacific Ocean in the east, the Province of Sorsogon in the south, and the Burias Pass in the southeast.
Albay is a major supplier of geothermal energy to the Luzon Grid with its Tiwi Geothermal Plant in Tiwi, Albay with an energy generating capacity of 330 megawatts and the Bacon-Manito (BacMan) Geothermal Plant at the boundaries of Manito, Albay and Bacon, Sorsogon with an energy generating capacity of 210 megawatts.

Found along the shores of Buthan beach at Sto Domingo, Albay, this galleon relic was wrecked by a strong typhoon on its way to Acapulco and crushed on the reefs of Albay Gulf.
Albay can be reached from Manila by the country's flag carrier, Philippine Airlines, or by bus, train or special tourist vans, all on daily, regular schedules.

They officially established the place and named it Manito because it was abounded with a clinging vine called “nito” which belongs to rattan family and is used as a raw material for making baskets.
Later, natives from the neighboring towns of Albay, Bacon and Rapu-Rapu who also fled from the Moro raiders found a safer near the seashore and near the thick forest of Manito.

MANITO, Albay -- Manito may be a far-flung town and considered one of the poorest in Albay province but tourists are flocking to it for its peculiar lake, a boiling body of water that can cook eggs in 10 minutes.
During high tide, the lake is submerged by seawater from the Albay Gulf, but the bubbling, boiling water is still visible.
Rocks and soils, as well as the river tributaries, are amber and gold because of extreme heat and steam pressure.

But as you get off at the Manito town proper, brace yourself for another ride going to Barangay Nag-aso (the exact location of the lake, and obviously is where the lake got its name) through 15 kilometers of rough and bumpy roads.

Legazpi City, March 14, 2000 A dormant volcano in Manito town, Albay, is reportedly waking up from 4,000 years of slumber.
Residents of Barangay Buragwis, an elevated area across Albay Gulf, reported seeing the "glowing phenomenon" in Pocdol mountain range after a recent earthquake and while Mayon volcano was erupting.
Vulcanologist Ed Laguerta confirmed that Pocdol mountain range is comprised of dormant volcanoes that had erupted several times in the distant past, and that this information is based on the range's geologic past.

PILI, Camarines Sur—The rice pest called fl bug or tayangaw in local dialect has spread to the coastal towns of Sangay, San Jose and Lagonoy, according to the information chief of the Department of Agriculture here.
Emily Bordado, chief of the communications department of the DA here, said the spread of fl bug to Camarines Sur was spawned by cruising fishing vessels from Albay and Sorsogon.
She said initial theory was that fishing vessels from Manito, Albay which is a short distance away from Sorsogon towns known to be infested with fl bug.

It's a town that has public elementary and secondary schools but no college yet.
Building a school in this town means no competition and it also means a big help to the high school graduates because they will no longer need to go to Legaspi City (4 hours ride from Manito) to study in college.
