The University of Manitoba (established in 1877) is one of two universities in Winnipeg, Manitoba and was the first university ever established in Western Canada.
Among the popular cultural institutions in the city are: the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG), the Manitoba Opera, the Manitoba Museum (formerly the Museum of Man and Nature), the Manitoba Theatre Centre, the Prairie Theatre Exchange, and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
Winnipeg's four universities are the University of Manitoba (undergraduate, graduate school, and medical school), College universitaire de Saint-Boniface affiliated with University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg (undergraduate and select graduate programs) and Canadian Mennonite University (private).

The Manitoba Bisons cross country teams competed at the 2005 CIS Cross Country Championships at Dalhousie on Saturday, November 12.

Winnipeg, Manitoba -- Mike Sirant, head coach of the University of Manitoba Bisons, has been named the Canada West Hockey Coach of the Year for 2004-05.
The 2004-05 campaign has seen the former Manitoba Bison forward lead the club to their most successful season in the past five years.
In overall play, the Bisons are 18-14-5 in 37 games against intercollegiate opponents heading into this week's opening round of the Canada West playoffs.

Bison Gold advanced to the finals with a semi-final win over Brandon's ICE in two straight sets, while Winman took their semi-final match against Bison Black in a hard fought three set series.
Bison 18U gold finished the round robin 1st in their pool and defeated the Saskatoon Volleyball Club and the ACC Cougars in straight sets in the quarter finals and semi finals respectively.
Bison 18U Black finished the round robin ranked 2nd in their pool and were defeated by the ACC Cougars in the quarter finals.

Manitoba went on the powerplay and Ottawa netminder made three great saves in a row; including a point blank shot by the Bisons' Chris Falloon.
Manitoba pretty much kept the play in the Ottawa end for the rest of the period and were rewarded by a Warren McCutcheon goal at 18:44; assisted by Saurette and Rob Smith.
Manitoba outshot Ottawa 20-4 in the third and 53-20 in the match.

Words simply cannot describe the great show that the 2000 CIAU Men's Volleyball Champion Manitoba Bisons and the defending champion Saskatchewan Huskies put on tonight in Ste-Foy, before an amazing crowd of close to 2,000.
Manitoba lets an early 10-5 lead slip away and Saskatchewan comes back to 9-10, with the Huskies taking the lead at 14-13.
Finally though, at 31-30 Bisons, Bryan Enns cashed in with the winning block and the Bisons were 2000 CIAU Champions!

A member of the University of Manitoba Bisons Women's volleyball team for five years (1988-93), perhaps her most significant volleyball accomplishment was being named the CIAU Player of the Year two years in a row (1990-91 and 1991-92).
A finalist as the Manitoba Female Athlete of the Year in both 1990 and 1992, Sawatzky was named the University of Manitoba Female Athlete of the Year in 1993.

QUEBEC CITY (CIS) — The Manitoba Bisons claimed the bronze medal at the 2005 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) men’s volleyball championship upsetting the defending national champion Saskatchewan Huskies 24-26, 25-21, 25-17, 18-25, 22-20, at the end of the longest decisive set in championship history.
Fifth-seeded Manitoba hadn’t defeated No. 3 Saskatchewan in regular-season and post-season play in 2004-05, taking only two sets from their conference rivals in five meetings.
The Bisons win a fifth CIS medal in six years, after capturing the national title in 2003, 2001 and 2000, and finishing third in 2002.
