Ontario made the surrender of six of the seven Rainy River reserves a condition of its agreement to enact legislation to confirm all the remaining Treaty 3 reserves in Ontario.
In September 1982, the Rainy River First Nations filed a claim with Canada and Ontario claiming that the reserves were wrongfully taken and that the First Nations had been subjected to undue duress and influence which meant the First Nations had never freely consented to the surrenders resulting in their invalidity.
The Crown land to be set apart as reserve for the Rainy River First Nations under the settlement is located in the Hay Bay area of Lake of the Woods, at Sphene Lake and the Gates Ajar area of Pipestone Lake.

Founded in 1902 in North Bay as the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway Commission, the T. and N.O. was a provincial government railroad intended to facilitate Northern Ontario colonization from Lake Nipissing to New Liskeard on the northern end of Lake Temiskaming.
Father David Joseph Scollard, born in Ennismore, Ontario on 4 November 1862 and ordained as a priest on 21 December 1890, was appointed to North Bay in 1896.
The Ontario branch of the Federation of Sisters of St. Joseph of Canada is headquartered in London.

Singer-songwriter Marie-Claire Séguin is "adopting" the Manitou River, as part of a larger campaign by Quebecers from all regions and public figures, to draw attention to the threat posed to the province's rivers as Quebec embarks on a plan to give permission to private companies for construction on 36 sites along 24 of Quebec's rivers.
Marie-Claire Séguin joins with Quebecers from all regions to in an appeal to the government of Quebec to not destroy the Manitou; to designate it as a park, and to ensure a sustainable future for the area.

In fact, Lake Manitou has a place in the Guiness Book of World Records as "the largest lake within a freshwater island in the world." Lake Manitou, because of its size and depth and the purity of its waters, is also provincially significant in terms of lake trout rearing.
Situated at the source of the Manitou River, Sandfield was settled in the late 1800s.
In 1937, the province of Ontario began raising fish at Sandfield, and the rearing ponds are still used for trout and pickerel.

The Oswego is a large river with a watershed draining an area of several hundred square miles in central New York before entering Lake Ontario at the City of Oswego.

We learned about the traditional housing styles, the harvesting of wild rice (ziibing the rice is similar to stomping grapes), ancient pottery techniques that made use of the river's clay, and the floral beaded work that is a hallmark of Ojibway culture.
We gazed at the impressive wall size murals by Native artists and appreciated the workmanship of the Jingle Dress regalia that was adorned with hundreds of long, tubular cones made out of shiny metal that 'jingle' as the dancer moves.
