		A manned space mission is a space exploration mission with human crew, and possibly passengers (in contrast to unmanned space missions which are remotely-controlled or robotic space probes).
		Manned space missions beyond Earth orbit have been carried out by the United States only: to the Moon.
		The first manned space mission was the Vostok 1 on April 12, 1961: Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin made one orbit around the earth.

		China's fourth unmanned space capsule lands safely, boosting confidence that Beijing is set to launch its first manned spacecraft.

		Crushing pressure to keep the agency's manned space program on time and on budget — in an environment where there wasn't nearly enough of either — induced NASA officials to cut corners where safety and system reliability were concerned.
		The need for the Space Station is another issue entirely, but suffice it to say that the station's future needs to be considered with a critical eye, given its ever-scaled-down mission and questionably adequate budget to support the program in the foreseeable future.

		The relative cost of scientific components of manned space missions thus is usually marginal.
