Forty-five days later, the first of several American soldiers was killed by, ostensibly, one of the exported weapons, and a number of the rifles were recovered in raids on Iraqi insurgents.
On their website, Steyr Mannlicher offered a corporate response to these allegations, claiming that no hard proof, in the form of serial numbers, has yet been offered to confirm that the weapons that killed American soldiers were indeed from the eight hundred exported to Iran.
The statement also pointed out that since the international license for the HS.50 is expired, the weapons in Iraq could be knockoffs from other manufacturers.

 Ruger's Gun Talk
Mannlicher was born in 1848 in Mainz, Germany, though he received much of his engineering education in Austria, a country that he basically adopted as his own, and the one in which he would develop his most important arms and receive his most important honors.
Interestingly enough, Mannlicher did not adapt his clip packet to the pistol, but rather employed a magazine that required cartridges to be stripped down into it by means of a removable clip.
In 1896, a Mannlicher blowback system was introduced that was first produced by Steyr (who manufactured most of his guns) in that year and which became universally available in a slightly different version in 1903.

Modern Firearms - Steyr Mannlicher M95 (M1895) rifle
Ferdinand Von Mannlicher developed his first straight-pull bolt action rifle by 1884, and by 1885 he developed the famous Mannlicher en block clip, which was inserted into the box magazine from the top, and automatically ejected through the opening at the bottom of the magazine as the last round was chambered.
Earliest Mannlicher straight-pull rifles have had not so strong wedge-locking system, but in 1890 he introduced a straight pull bolt action with rotary bolt head with two lugs, which he latter used in M95 rifles.
Steyr Mannlicher M95 bolt has a separate head with two frontal locking lugs; bolt head was inserted into the bolt body from the front.

 Mannlicher-Schönauer
The Mannlicher-Schönauer (sometimes Anglicized as "Mannlicher Schoenauer," Hellenized as Τυφέκιον Μάνλιχερ or Όπλον Μάνλιχερ-Σενάουερ) is a type of rotary magazine bolt action rifle adopted by both the Greek and Austrian Armies in 1903.
The rifle action was designed by Ferdinand Mannlicher and the rotary magazine by Otto Schönauer of the Österreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft (Austrian Arms-Manufacturing Company; now Steyr Mannlicher).
This rifle should not be confused with its more widely manufactured cousin, the Steyr-Mannlicher M1895, or the so-called Mannlicher-Carcano, made infamous in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy by Lee Harvey Oswald.

Development then, had to be focused on weapons firing powerful cartridges from locked-breech systems that were magazine fed. The Mannlicher Model 1903, shown here, was an attempt at such a design.
Although it fired a cartridge of the same dimensions as the Mauser, because of its lighter stature the actual charge had to be less.
So, the Mannlicher was not considered safe to fire the 7.63 mm round used in the Mauser self-loading pistol.
