The National Archives | Manorial Document Register | Help | Definition of a manor
For the purposes of the Manorial Documents Register the definitive proof of the existence of a manor is the survival of records produced by the manorial court.
The manor name information within the Manorial Documents Register is not designed to be a definitive list of all manors which existed but only records the names of manors for which documents were, or may have been, created in order to enable those documents to be entered on the Manorial Documents Register.
Therefore, the lists of manors and manor names compiled should not be regarded as a definitive register of all manors that may have existed.

We estimated that Douglaston Manor failed to report receipts from admissions, coat-check revenue, and certain food and beverage sales totaling $25,345 in April 2000 that were collected at its Wednesday and Friday dance events, and failed to report revenue totaling $22,315 received from certain banquets that were held during that month.
At Douglaston Manor, this would include observing that all transactions are recorded, ensuring that all cash is placed in the registers, and that any cash removed from the registers remains in the auditors’ sight until after it is counted by the proprietor.
Interestingly, Douglaston Manor’s response to a prior Comptroller’s audit covering the period November 1, 1992 through October 31, 1995, indicated that banquet revenue was recognized and reported in accordance with the accrual basis of accounting.

 From Whence They Came
The records, which date from 1602 to 1925, provide a wealth of information about the manorial system and books, maps, indentured inheritance records, several rental deeds, design plans and more than 70 pages of court records — hand-lettered in Latin on parchment — that detailed the legal proceedings of the Manor of Surlingham.
The records were destined to remain underutilized until fate intervened.
Many of the oldest hand-written materials from the 17th to 19th centuries were incredibly difficult to decipher and — because of the size of the writing and of the scrolls and books — they could not be photocopied.
