Manos Hadjidakis - Biography - AOL Music
Hadjidakis was born in the northern town of Xanthi, Greece, on October 23, 1925.
In 1948, Hadjidakis gave a high-profile academic lecture praising rembetika (sometimes spelled rebetico), the popular folk song form that was the province of the urban lower class and was regarded as borderline immoral by the conservative intelligentsia.
Hadjidakis returned to Greece in 1972, and when the military dictatorship fell, he took a number of high-ranking cultural positions: directing the State Orchestra (through 1981) and the classical-oriented channel of the national radio (1982), as well as becoming deputy director of the national opera (until 1977).

Manos Hadjidakis was born in the city of Xanthi (a town in northern Greece) on October 23rd, 1925.
Although Hadjidakis had initially made a recording of this music as written for the play in 1960, it was not however at that time as complete a work, as he would have liked.
In 1975, after the fall of the military dictatorship, Hadjidakis became involved with public affairs, in the firm belief that after all the disasters and national crises, this was the right moment for institutional revisions and new acts of legislation.

Manos Hadjidakis came my way from Athens and bolstered me, first by his help in finishing the film --the last five percent of the work on a movie is often the difference between success and failure--but even more by his confidence in the worth of what I showed him.
Manos was a king that year; he was also a man perhaps excessively devoted to his mother, who'd lost his four front teeth and never bothered to replace them.
Manos was not only a composer, he was a dramatist, and his sense of where the drama was, how to reinforce it, how to join various episodes so they'd have the most effect, surpassed my own.

 ekathimerini.com | Multi-national fete of Manos Hadjidakis
More often than not, there seemed to be a global perspective in the work of the late Manos Hadjidakis throughout his career, an open-minded one very much in tune with developments — musical and not — beyond the national frontiers.
Considering the man’s unconfined ways, “The World and Manos Hadjidakis,” an ambitious production featuring a multinational cast of esteemed artists for performances in Athens tomorrow and Thursday, promises to be an appropriate tribute to Hadjidakis, who passed away a decade ago, on June 15, 1994.
Hadjidakis’s son, Giorgos Hadjidakis, initiated the idea and recruited Greek composer Nikos Kypourgos, whose career was fostered early on by Hadjidakis, as supervisor.
