Both the mansio and the bath-house at Letocetvm stand on a westward-facing slope which overlooks the shallow valley of a tributary of the Crane Brook.
The largest room in the mansio lay in the north-east corner, and was of such dimensions that the colonnaded walkway was reduced in width in this area.
It is thought, though it cannot be confirmed, that the three square rooms on the western side of the mansio and the stairwell in the north-west corner had the area beneath them available for storage, and that these storage spaces were accessed from outside at street level.

The one on the Eastern Heights still stands in the grounds of Dover Castle to 80 foot (24 m) high close to its original height, and has been adapted for use as the bell tower of the adjacent castle church.
The Roman Painted House is a Roman mansio, a hostel for government officials, which was built in c.
This demolition preserved the mansio and its wall-paintings better than usual, since the foots of the walls were contained in the fort's rampart.

The Prehistoric Society - Book Review
The remains near Medvedja lay close to the point where the road crossed the river Resava, a tributary of the Greater Morava, and the identification with the mansio of Idimum is based on the surviving ancient itineraries listing the stopping places and the distances between them.
The next mansio to the north lay at Kaliste (Municipium) 27 Roman miles to the north and the next travelling south lay 16 miles away at or near the town of Horreum Margi (Cuprija) where the road reached the river Morava, which it more or less followed to Naissus (Nis), crossroads of the central Balkans.
The mansio ceased to function, at least in the role of supporting officials and private travelers, since the coin series suddenly stops after AD 378, the year when effective imperial control of this region collapsed following the disaster at Hadrianopolis and the long-distance overland traffic along the roads was interrupted.

The Mansio is in the foreground, with the bath-house beyond.
Letocetum was situated on the boundary between two native British tribes, the Coritani in the east with their tribal centre at Ratae Coritanorum (Leicester), and the Cornovii to the west with their capital at Viroconium Cornoviorum (Wroxeter, Shropshire).
Towards the end of the second century the mansio (and bath-house?) was destroyed by fire, and at the same time, several buildings at Viroconivm Cornoviorvm were also destroyed.

The location would have been typical of a mansio, a high-class establishment where Roman officials, travellers on government business and important messengers could spend the night, eat, or even just change horses.
“Mansios were often found near town gates and often had detached bathrooms, like we found at the college.
If a mansio did stand on the site, it would have been used by wealthy and important guests.

By using the network of way stations along his route, the emperor Tiberius was able to cover 500 miles without stopping to get to his brother, Drusus, when he heard that he was dying of gangrene after a fall from a horse.
And the geophysics survey results, confirmed by trenches dug to identify the lines of key walls, enabled the Team to draw up a detailed floor plan of the building – which was erected around a courtyard, with large numbers of associated structures stretching over a 600-metre-square area.
Outside the ditches, further geophysics surveys revealed an extensive settlement that pre-dated the mansio, with pits, ditches, trackways and even a roundhouse, which Miles Russell thought at first might be a Roman mausoleum, showing up clearly.

The municipality of Faverges has just acquired several acres of land from private owners so that the dig may be extended beyond its current perimeter.
Volunteer diggers have uncovered a mansio, (a type of Roman "motel"), complete with Roman baths, peristyle, and outbuildings dating from the 1st-century BC to the 3rd century CE.
The mansio and adjacent buildings were apparently put to the torch by a band of roving Alaman raiders in the year 270, as has been attested both by documentary and archeological evidence.

London & Middlesex Archaeological Society: Transactions 43 (1992): Roman mansio in Southwark: abstract
The Roman settlement on the south bank of the Thames, opposite the central core of Londinium, has often been regarded as a mere suburb of the city across the river.
The building may have had a public function, possibly as a mansio providing accommodation for the cursus publicus (imperial posting service) and other government officials.
Significantly, its position was at the southern approach to Londinium, close to the junction of two main roads.

Her brother has lost his job as a government investigator, the mansio is menaced by a gang of native criminals, and when a party of rich, demanding travelers arrive to stay, their quarrels and violence spill over into Aurelia's household.
This second book in the series takes Aurelia from the quiet countryside to the busy new garrison town of York where she must contend with traitors and crooks, and face personal danger to protect her sister and help her brother.

What made you decide to set your stories in a mansio [inn] on the edge of the Empire in Britain rather than closer to the heart, where Claudius ruled and most Roman mysteries are set?
Similarly, she accepts that men have political power and legal superiority over women, but that doesn't prevent her being sure that she personally is equal to the men around her.
Aurelia Marcella and her half-sister Albia run the Oak Tree Mansio, a prosperous inn on the road to Eburacum (modern York).

A Bitter Chill by Jane Finnis
Finnis stays true to the customs of the time by having Aurelia's brother Lucius the mansio's (inn's) legal owner, but Aurelia's clearly in charge (I suspect that happened more often than we might think).
The mansio and frontier settings provide a natural context for the stories to be filled with a variety of native and Roman characters, with inevitable conflicts among them.
A Bitter Chill is second in the series, with each book working well as a standalone.
