Manticore - Monstropedia - the largest encyclopedia about monsters
The manticore, considered to be the most dangerous predator in Asia, has the body of a lion and a head with human.
The manticore is reputed to roam in the jungles of India and Indonesia, and is known to have an appetite for humans.
In the middle ages, the manticore was the emblem for the prophet Jeremhia because the manticore lives in the depths of the earth and Jeremiah had been thrown into a dung pit.

 Manticore
The term Manticore is a derived from the Latin, Mantichora, from the greek mantikhoras, being a mistranslation of the Persian words martiya (man) and khvar (to eat), hence the term man-eater as a description.
The manticore is also known as the "manticora", the "mantichor", or by a folk etymology, even the "mantiger".
Outside occultist circles, the manticore was still an arcane creature in the Western world when Gian Carlo Menotti wrote his ballet The Unicorn, the Gorgon, and the Manticore in 1956.

OFS has connections to massive industrial combines and genetic slavers, and wants control of Talbott for two reasons: the potential profits from the control of wormhole trade and the removal of a foreign military presence that might expose their ties to the unseemly groups that provide them support.
The Cluster wisely makes the choice to seek annexation by Manticore to avoid the far worse fate of “liberation” by the OFS, but separatist politicians, terrorists, arms dealers, pirates, and military action by opposing star nations threaten to screw up the annexation before it can be finalized.
In this new series, Weber proves that the Honorverse is greater than Honor Harrington, and that he can write a novel that is fully as compelling as his earlier work without relying on Honor at all.

 Honorverse
The Honorverse is the semi-official name for the setting of a military science fiction series of stories by David Weber featuring Honor Harrington, the Nelsonesque heroine in the Horatio Hornblower type of contemporary and popular book series (New releases regularly reach the New York Times best sellers list).
Technological advances in the Honorverse have come slow and far between for most of the 500 years of the Star Kingdom of Manticore's existence, and as the series opens, the stagnation in technology leads to a similar stagnation in both strategy and military tactics.
The grav-wave propulsion systems require "gun ports" and captains strive to position their ships to maximize their fire power by using a broadside akin to the unturreted days dominated by the warships and battleships of the Age of Sail, and like Horatio Hornblower, Honor Stephanie Harrington is a superb ship handler bordering on genius.

 Honor Harrington - SCIFIPEDIA
This long-running (eleven volumes and counting) military sf series, Honor Harrington, by David Weber chronicles the adventures of Honor Harrington, an officer in the Royal Manticoran Space Navy, in a far-future interstellar civilization that mostly parallels the society and politics of England and France during the early nineteenth century.
The Star Kingdom of Manticore, a parliamentary monarchy is locked in ongoing hostilities with the People’s Republic of Haven, a socialist dictatorship.
Over the course of the series Harrington’s reputation (and the accolades heaped upon her) grow accordingly; by book eleven she is an Admiral in two different navies, a confidante of the Queen, a national hero and high-ranking noble on two different worlds and fabulously wealthy in the bargain.

SF REVIEWS.NET: On Basilisk Station / David Weber
There is as much political discord in Manticore as there is on Capitol Hill today, but things are more or less in check at the time Basilisk opens, as the Centrists and Crown Loyalists are in power, staving off the extremes of both liberals and conservatives.
But sharp ideological convictions even trickle down to Navy leadership, and Harrington's first assignment is to test a new weapon that is the brainchild of an admiral whom she happens to dislike.
What's worse, Basilisk is currently under the command of Captain Pavel Young, a sexist asshole who's gotten where he is by pure nepotism, and who once tried to sexually assault her while they were at the academy together.

But Haven's plan is dependent on Manticore's long record of lax customs enforcement - and no one counted on Honor Harrington and the HMS Fearless uncovering the invasion plan, much less single-handedly stopping it.

What was supposed to be a quiet outpost, far from the blazing conflict between the Star Kingdom of Manticore and the People's Republic of Haven has actually been targeted by an unholy alliance between the slaveholders of Manpower, the rival star kingdoms of Mesa and Monica, and the bureaucrats of the Solarian League.
