Thomas J. Manton, former Member of Congress (Democrat) from the Seventh Congressional District in Queens and Bronx Counties, New York, was first elected in 1984 and retired at the end of his seventh consecutive term in 1998.
Congressman Manton was born in 1932 of Irish immigrant parents on the West side of Manhattan.
In addition to his state and local duties, Congressman Manton has been elected delegate to the Democratic Convention in 1984 and was appointed delegate in 1988 and 1992.

Thomas Manton, Astoria native, seven term congressman and head of the Queens Democratic party, was fond of saying that he wouldn’t battle 3,000 year old institutions or men who print ink by the barrel.
Sweeney said that Manton “lived his life on the wings of history.” He also noted that it was particularly fitting that the Woodside Post Office was chosen, as Manton would often note the fact that more men were killed in the Vietnam War from the Woodside ZIP code than anywhere else in the county.
Manton’s family was presented with the plaque officially renaming the post office and his daughter, Cathy Laurent, spoke at the end of the ceremony.
