Mantronix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mantronix was an innovative and influential 1980s old school hip hop and electro funk music group led by DJ and keyboardist Kurtis Mantronik (Kurtis Khaleel), and rapper MC Tee (Touré Embden).
Mantronix underwent several genre (and line-up) changes during its seven-year existence (1984-1991), from old school hip hop to electro funk to house music, but the group is primarily remembered for its original, heavily synthesized blend of old school hip-hop and electro funk.
Mantronix's debut single, "Fresh is the Word," was a club hit in 1985, reaching #16 on the Hot Dance Singles Sales chart, and was featured on Mantronix: The Album which was released the same year.

Mantronix was formed in New York in 1984.
Their second single was "Bassline" from their debut "The album" in 1986 which probably is one of the coolest and rawest hip hop albums ever made.
Mantronix was ahead of their time in their music and production.

Mantronix ¤ Kurtis Mantronik - Articles
Almost simultaneous with Mantronix, Run DMC had broken on the scene with a completely new approach to the music that featured much more sampling and emphasized the hard, punk rock side of the music that had always been latent in Mantronix, Busy Bee and others.
The second Mantronix album, also from 1986, Music Madness, seems at first a continuation of the first, and songs like "Who Is It" certainly are further explorations into electronic polyrhythm and voice-as-electronic percussion.
The smooth, commercial sound of Mantronix was nowhere to be found in his live show, and with the release of his 1998 album, I Sing the Body Electro (with guitarist Carlos Alomar of David Bowie fame), nowhere to be found in his remixes, either.

They reflect the sound of the New York clubscene that Kurtis Mantronix was so much a part of in the 1980s -- where he moved between the exclusive worlds of Hip-Hop, Electro and Disco/House with ease.
Mantronix quickly became an underground star, releasing in quick succession a string of classic releases such as 'Needle to the Groove', 'Who Is It?', 'King of the Beats' and 'Bassline'.
As Mantronix became a star, Sleeping Bag also quickly became THE underground New York dance label releasing many more tracks played, produced or remixed by Mantronix as well as releasing Arthur Russell's legendary project Dinosaur L 'Go Bang' and Larry Levan's classic 'Weekend'.

He signed Mantronix soon after hearing it, and released their debut single, "Fresh Is the Word." The track lit up New York's streets and clubs during 1985, and brought the full-length Mantronix: The Album early the following year.
The increasing popularity of hip-hop gave Mantronix a chance at a major-label contract, and by 1987 the duo had signed with Capitol.
A Mantronix respective and several album reissues began filtering out in 1999, and Mantronik began recording a new group album later that year.

Yet this pioneering hip-hop album introduced a style and sound which blesses nearly all of today's beat-centered music, from the massive, head-knock electronics of "big beat" artists such as the Chemical Brothers to the 808-obsessed minimalism of the Cash Money clique.
Mantronix's production and programming introduced synths, drum machines, and electro aesthetics to the young hip-hop nation.
Although this music came from before my time, I believe Kurtis Mantronix is one of the best in hip hop production of all time, and definitely the most underrated.

Kurtis Mantronik (Jamaica-USA) :: Culture Picks :: Moscow's virtual community for English speaking expats and Russians
One of the most influential hip-hop producers of the 1980s, Kurtis Mantronik returned in the mid-'90s with a solo career that showed him fitting in well with the legion of big beat artists he had inspired.
As the nominal leader of Mantronix, he produced a good half-dozen early rap classics, including "Basslines," "Ladies," and "King of the Beats." By the late '80s however, Mantronik had moved into R&B and house; after Mantronix disintegrated in 1991, he spent several years working on production, then left music altogether.
Praise for the album spurred him to re-form Mantronix and begin recording a new LP.

Mantronix - The Album (1985/1986) at Ochblog
The album's high-tech, futuristic production sets it apart from other New York hip-hop of the mid-'80s, and even though one of the LP's tracks is titled "Hardcore Hip-Hop," Mantronix had a hard time appealing to hip-hop's hardcore.
Mantronix: The Album actually fared better in dance music, electro-funk, and club circles than it did among hardcore b-boys.
But this is definitely a hip-hop record, and it is also Mantronix's most essential release.

They had one mildly interesting single with "Don't Go Messin' With My Heart," but otherwise, the formerly inspired mix of hip-hop/dance production and soul/R&B vocals wasn't as exuberant or as catchy.
