		Manual communication systems use articulation of the hands (hand signs), gestures, body language and facial expressions in place of the voice to mediate a message between persons.
		Manual communication is employed in systems that are codes for spoken languages (see Manually Coded Language), and with natural languages, such as in sign languages.
		They communicate with a very limited set of signals about an even smaller set of topics and have been developed for situations where speech is not practical or permitted, or secrecy is desired.

	Augmentative and Alternative Communication
		AB: The communication skills of 13 youth with moderate or severe mental retardation were compared while they communicated with a "standard partner" with and without access to their augmented communication devices.
		Results found that access to visual media made a significant difference in the student's ability to communicate and that access to the control of the medium was important to her.
		The interactive nature of the visuals on the communication device appeared to engage her cognitively, and her perception of herself changed as a result of her access to visual media.
