In the contemporary parlance, "The Chicago Manual of Style," might better be called "User Interface Guidelines for Book Authors." In 1891 it consisted of a single sheet of typographic style fundamentals drawn up by the first proofreader at the University of Chicago Press.
Though the manual discusses the relationships between the author, editor, publisher and typesetters of books, and the general mechanics of producing books, its primary purpose is to explain how to make books easier to read.
Due to the newness of the WWWeb, most of the current HTML and WWWeb style guides are about as useful to hypertext authors as the 1891 version of "The Chicago Manual of Style" was to book authors.

While both their titles include "style", Strunk and White's classic Elements of Style deals only with style in the narrow sense, while the AGPS (Australian Government Printing Service) Style Manual is a style manual in the technical sense and covers a much wider range of material.
While they contain some similar material, technical manuals such as the AGPS Style Manual also contain a lot more: advice on abbreviations, titles, punctuation, hyphenation and non-discriminatory language is coupled with information on such a diverse range of topics as editing, book-binding, typesetting, proofreading, indexing, illustrating and publishing.
The AGPS manual is surprisingly readable for such a compendium.
