Manual transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Manual transmissions are characterized by gear ratios that are selectable by engaging pairs of gears inside the transmission.
Manual transmissions come in two basic types: simple unsynchronized systems, where gears are spinning freely and their relative speeds must be synchronized by the operator to avoid noisy and damaging "clashing" and "grinding" when trying to mesh the rotating teeth; and synchronized systems, which eliminate this necessity while changing gears.
Manual transmissions are lubricated with gear oil, which must be changed periodically in some cars, although not as frequently as the automatic transmission fluid in a vehicle so equipped.

 cars - Manual transmission
A manual transmission (also known as a stick shift or standard transmission) is a type of transmission used in automotive applications.
Contemporary automotive manual transmissions are generally available with between 4 and 6 forward gears and one reverse gear, although manual transmissions have been built with as few as 2 and as many as 7 gears.
In most vehicles equipped with manual transmissions, the engine and transmission are separated by a clutch, controlled by a pedal on the left hand side of the driver's footwell (usually operated with the left foot) that modulates the transfer of power between the two subsystems.

Manual transmission driving technique - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Driving a car or truck with a manual transmission can be daunting for beginners.
In this situation, stressful for a new manual transmission driver, it is important that the driver remain calm and focused.
Manual transmissions have an inherent fuel efficiency advantage compared to conventional automatic transmissions (the type that have a torque converter coupled to a planetary gearbox) because the torque converter, a kind of fluid-coupled clutch, wastes a percentage of the engine power.

Manual transmission - TheBestLinks.com - Stick shift, Audi, Canada, Clutch, ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Manual transmissions are most commonly selected for sports cars, since they are typically more efficient than automatics, thus allowing a greater proportion of the engine's power to be used, and because they give drivers the greatest possible degree of control over the operation of the vehicle's power train.
In a vehicle with a manual transmission, the engine and transmission are separated by a clutch, controlled by a pedal on the left hand side of the driver's footwell that modulates the transfer of power between the two subsystems:

Clutch Techniques, Engaging Options - Jeep at Off-Road.com
The technique is a very useful one, but the value of the technique is sometimes overstated.
Normally, on steep descents with a manual transmission, the best technique is to shift to a low gear and descend using engine compression to slow your descent, keeping your foot off the brake.
Keeping the transmission in 2nd or 3rd is can be very handy if you are in a very steep descent, and the nose of your Jeep is going to hit the bottom hard with the risk of rolling over on your lid.

 TSB 06-01-94
Some 1989 to 1993 Ram trucks equipped with the 5.9L Cummins diesel and manual transmission my exhibit a powertrain induced cyclic groaning or harsh noise condition that appears to be transmission or driveline related.
The noise is not damaging to the powertrain and is due to the dampening characteristics of the clutch springs.
Perform a road test with the vehicle owner, using the recommended gear selection speeds, to ensure that the owner understands that the noise condition is the result of driving technique and not a problem in the transmission or powertrain system.

THE MERCK MANUAL, Sec. 16, Ch. 205, Arrhythmias
Impulse transmission from the sinoatrial node through the atrium to the atrioventricular node appears to be through normal unspecialized myocardial cells.
The atria are electrically insulated from the ventricles except by the atrioventricular node, whose tortuous conduction pathway delays impulse transmission.
The atrioventricular nodal refractory period usually is longer than that of other heart tissue, is heart rate dependent, and is modulated by autonomic tone and by catecholamines, adjusting activation of the ventricles relative to the atria to maximize cardiac output for any given heart rate.

EDN -- 12.21.95 software mods add manual mode to automatic transmission   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
After developing the 42LE electronic transmission used in the Eagle Vision TSi, Anderson realized that a bit of software could extend the transmission’s design to include the features of a manual transmission.
Actually, the modification required adding code to the transmission’s control processor, redesigning the shift lever so that it could move sideways as well as forward and backward, adding components to sense the shift lever’s left-right motion, and adding "Autostick" annunciators that indicate the selected gear to the dashboard’s instrument cluster.
The control processor’s gear-shifting algorithms ensure that the shifts occur smoothly and that the engine throttle and transmission shifting are coordinated to prevent undue strain in the power train.

A heel-and-toe downshift refers to a specific technique used to downshift a manual transmission car.
The problem with Frank's technique is that when he lets out the clutch, it is not going to be a smooth shift.
For racecar drivers, however, this technique is too slow and also means that when the car is going around the corner, the clutch is pushed in, a serious no-no in a racecar.

At all times transmission output shaft is rotating, fluid is being pumped by pump (12) through check ball (18) through filter (30) to passages leading to the actuating pistons (49) and the solenoid (39).
During the transition from Sprague clutch drive to planetary gear drive, the planetary gear drive is trying to make the output shaft move faster but cannot because the sun gear is not stationary and the Sprague clutch is just sitting there trying to drive but cannot.

Plus, I figure learning to drive a manual is in general a good thing and a useful skill to have.
The drive back into Boston at the height of rush hour was a humbling education, and that weekend I did nothing but practice slow driving around empty parking lots.
Further to places to learn to drive a manual (someone mentioned parking lots), I find that housing estates/subdivisions that are under construction are perfect on weekends: no people (no-one's moved in; builders don't work on weekends); perfect, brand-new roads; and good visibility (no established gardens or trees; most of the houses are frames).

Sequential Manual Gearbox proposes a new powertrain paradigm
Although it’s not the first SMG I’ve encountered (see last year’s impressions of an Audi TT Roadster similarly equipped), it is a very new and untraditional transmission technology that forces a driver-an enthusiast driver, at least-to adopt a new driving technique otherwise unsuited to manual or automatic transmissions.
The automatic transmission remains in charge and merely flatters "the boss" that he or she is in control.

 Ridge Racer 5: Driving Tips
The Drift style cars are the hardest to drive in the game (with the exception of the Dual Cars) as they are designed to slide out when you break or release the gas in a corner.
We only suggest that you use a Manual Transmission once you've mastered every course in the game and are looking to get the best times possible.
A Manual Transmission will give your car a little added speed and a bit more control over acceleration and the slowing of your car before a turn, crucial if your going to shave off a second or two in the Hard mode.

Drifting is a knife-edge sort of driving technique, where you must be smooth and remain in control or else you will either slow the car unnecessarily or spin out.
The only time sliding is a useful technique is as a last-ditch effort to avoid going off the road or colliding with another object, or, sometimes as an advanced technique for off-road rally racing.
This technique is superior to the others because it can maintain more speed and it is easier to regain traction in the rear wheels, but it is also much harder to master.

Almost every car produced today is jam-packed with preprogrammed controllers for electronic ignition, spark-plug timing, transmission shifting, etc. Some transmissions offer a switch between N for Normal and S for Sport, the latter basically shifting a little slower, so you stay in the lower gear longer, losing gas mileage but perhaps gaining acceleration.
As we all know, however, the true exhilaration of driving is controlling the gear-shifting yourself, with a clutch-based manual transmission.
All of this is based on the angle of the accelerator pedal and the speed of pressing down on the accelerator -- the actions that a real driver would perform.

Well, I learned to drive on a manual so I learned it well and quickly (my dad taught me).
I only had to use my e-brake in real driving situations three or four times in the first month or two and haven't looked at it while driving since.
another thing, don't let newbies drive your car unless you don' care about it, i let two of my friends drive who just started to learn stick, one manhandled the shifter and must've been riding the clutch because the shifter felt like jello afterwards and my clutch was really really really hard to push down.

The previous technique avoids excessive clutch wear by matching the speed of the drive shaft to engine speed.
This may not be an issue because the synchromesh only needs to match the speed of the drive shaft (lots of momentum) to the speed of the layshaft without the engine engaged.
I continued to use this technique for four years before an automatic (minivan) replaced the manual Subaru in 2004.

How many people have had a clutch installed and ended up with some minor vibration from the clutch with or without a new flywheel?
If you put grease on your input shaft, make sure you didnt use too much, it can fling into the clutch at high rpm's, and cause chatter/slippage.
If others are having chatter also, i guess you'll have to accept it, and just change your driving technique a little to try and hide it (felt like it wanted to shake my car apart when i had it).
