Manuel Candamo (1847–May 7, 1904) was President of Peru from September 8, 1903 until May 7, the following year, when he died in office.
A member of the Civilista Party, Candamo served as mayor of Lima before being elected president.
Following a brief interim government headed by Serapio Calderon, Candamo was succeeded by his foreign minister José Pardo y Barreda.

Thereafter, they virtually controlled the presidency up until World War I, although Candamo died a few months after assuming office.

Civilian rule is restoreed in 1939 when Manuel Prado y Ugarteche of the Coalicion Conservadora (Conservative Coalition) becomes president, succeeded in 1945 by José Luis Bustamante y Rivero of the social democratic Frente Democratico Nacional (National Dmocration Front, FDN).
He establishes that year the conservative Manuel Prado y Ugarteche of the Movimiento Democrático de Pradista (Pradista Democratic Movement, MDP) is elected president.

He was one of seven children of the couple composed of Manuel Menéndez-Cañedo Alvarez, from Peñaflor (Grado), and María Menéndez Granda, born in Miranda, and they were known as “Los Zancos” (the stilts).
When José was scarcely two years old, his father took him to José Menéndez Granda’s house, his maternal uncle who worked as a teacher at Ventosa (Candamo) to give him a better primary instruction, on the condition that he would bring the child back home for two or three days a month.
Three years after that episode, José Menéndez was born in Miranda, and his fate would keep pace with the villagers’ due to mysterious ways that History has kept to itself.
