In December 1888, when the Conservative Correa d'Oliveira became prime minister, Fonseca was appointed to command an army corps on the frontier of Matto Grosso.
Fonseca had only intended to overturn the ministry, but he yielded to the insistency of the republican leaders and proclaimed a republic.
