Manuel Dorrego (1787-1828) served under Manuel Belgrano in the Army of the North during the wars of independence.
Dorrego returned in the 1820s and joined the federalist efforts to fight Bernardino Rivadavia’s liberal platform.
Dorrego thus became a martyr for the federalist cause, which then rallied around Juan Manuel de Rosas.

DORREGO, Manuel, Argentine soldier, born in Buenos Ayres, 15 February 1787; died at Navarro, 13 December 1828.
In 1811 Dorrego returned to his native City, was appointed commander of a regiment of cavalry, and distinguished himself in the battle of Salta under General Saavedra.
On the downfall of the dictator in 1820, Dorrego went home, was elected governor of Buenos Ayres, and organized troops to subdue the lawless bands that opposed the authorities in the interior under the name of " montoneros," whom he defeated, 2 August at San Nicolas de los Arroyos.

Eight thousand Paraguayans, commanded by General Barrios attacked the allied camp in Tuyutí, where Brazilian and Argentine forces were camping, gaining an initial victory.
General Manuel Hornos, commanding the Argentine cavalry, launched an all-out attack with the support of the Brazilian infantry, and crushed the Paraguayans, in their second defeat at this same place.
