Santa Anna's Description of San Jacinto
I had them call General Don Manuel Fernandez Castrillon, who was acting as major general, and told him to guard the camp and to advise me of the least movement on the part of the enemy.
Finally, contributing considerably to this misfortune was the conduct of General Castrillon and the leaders and officers to whom was commended the guarding of the camp facing the enemy.
It is true that General Castrillon conducted himself with extraordinary bravery in the final moments, according to what is told, but his efforts were useless, and his remorse must not have been small before he breathed his last if he remembered the abandonment of his duty when he should have been carrying it out.

When Castrillon refused to carry out the order, on moral grounds, since he had offered the men his protection, Santa Anna's staff fell on the men with sabers, hacking them to death, and in the process, almost killing Castrillon.

Before the siege, Santa Anna ordered that a red flag be raised from San Fernando cathedral indicating to the defenders inside the Alamo, that no quarter would be given.
According to the controversial Jose de le Pena diary several defenders who had not been killed in the assault on the Alamo, were captured by Col. Manuel Fernandez Castrillon and were presented to Santa Anna who personally ordered their execution.
De la Pena also states that Travis attempted to negotiate surrender with Santa Anna but was turned down on the grounds of 'no guarantees for traitors'.

Peña's account states that several prisoners from the Alamo were taken by Mexican General Manuel Fernández Castrillón and summarily executed by order of Mexican General and President Antonio López de Santa Anna.
Crockett, according to Peña's entry, was identified to Santa Anna by Castrillón, who along with two other officers, begged the General to spare the life of the great hero.
