Manuel Fernández Juncos (December 11, 1846 - August 18, 1928) was a distinguished Puerto Rican journalist, poet, author and humanitarian who wrote the official lyrics to La Borinqueña, the country's national anthem.
Fernandez Juncos first wrote for "El Progreso" (Progress), a newspaper founded by Jose Julian Acosta.
Fernandez Juncos joined the Autonomist Party founded by Roman Baldorioty de Castro and became its secretary.

Dueño is considered one of Puerto Rico's greatest composers, his most important contribution is perhaps the collections of school songs he wrote specifically for the island's schools, "Canciones Escolares" (1912), which were co-written with Virgilio Dávila and of Manuel Fernández Juncos.

The tune was officially adopted as the Commonwealth's anthem in 1952, and continued to be sung with the Manuel Fernández Juncos words (which, however, were not officially adopted until 1977).
The Fernández Juncos version is the most familiar version; it is, for example, sung spontaneously to celebrate Puerto Rican successes in athletic events.

The Spanish Red Cross founded the movement in Puerto Rico on July 7,1893 when Puerto Rico was still under the dominance of the Spain government.
Manuel Fernández Juncos, a member of the Spanish government and a Spanish Red Cross delegate to Puerto Rico, was the person charged with the task of founding "Las Comisiones de la Cruz Roja Española" (Spanish Red Cross branches) throughout Puerto Rico.
The Spanish Red Cross "Comisiones" (branches) in Puerto Rico remained active until 1898 when the American Red Cross started to make a presence on the island through its Nursing corps.

Puerto Rican folklorist Pablo Garrido maintains that La Fiesta de la Cruz de Mayo, brought to the island by Spanish conquistadores, was well established by the mid-1500s.
Historian Don Manuel Fernández Juncos reports that the fiesta gained wide popularity in 1787, after a devastating earthquake struck Puerto Rico shortly before May 3.
According to oral tradition, the Puerto Rican people promised to complete a novena (nine consecutive days of prayer or devotions) in honor of the Holy Cross if the earthquakes stopped and they were spared.
