Manuel Orantes, born February 5, 1949 in Granada, Spain was a tennis champion in the 1970s and 1980s.
With Manuel Santana and Andres Gimeno, Orantes flew the flag for the Iberian nation in tennis circles in the 1960s and '70s and remains Spain's most prolific title winner with 32 titles.
Manuel Martinez Santana was born May 10, 1938 in Madrid and played Davis Cup for Spain between 1958 and 1973.

The veteran Manuel Orantes won the $100,000 British clay-court title today with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over a compatriot, Angel Gimenez, then lashed out at the Spanish Tennis Federation.
Orantes has been afflicted by arm trouble off and on since he was 17 years old, but the left-hander, now 33, showed superb form throughout the tournament.
He dropped only one set, and in the final he delighted a capacity crowd with his delicate touch and tantalizing variation of spin and pace.

One of the masters of legerdemain, Manuel Martinez "Manolo" Santana was the first post-World War II European to gain universal respect because he not only won the most difficult clay-court event, the French singles in 1961 and 1964, but also the grass-court gems, Wimbledon of 1966 and the U.S. Championship of 1965 at Forest Hills.
His successes spurred the rapid development of tennis in Spain, where the sport was not much noticed prior to 1965, His protégé was Manuel Orantes, called Manolito (Little Manolo), who won the U.S. Championship at Forest Hills a decade after his own, though the surface had by then been transformed to clay.
He was named to the Hall of Fame in 1984, the second Spaniard, following Manuel Alonso.

Formado en Barcelona, fue el heredero y continuador de la carrera de Manuel Santana, con quien jugó en el equipo nacional de Copa Davis cuando él debutaba y Santana estaba próximo a retirarse.

Presentation of the award will be made on Sunday, during the 2004 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final between Spain and the United States in Seville, Spain.
