 Crash kills Cuba's 'Red Beard'
MIAMI -- Manuel Pineiro, the ruthless but urbane spymaster who for more than 30 years led Cuba's intelligence apparatus and directed its efforts to export revolution to the third world, died in a car crash in Havana early yesterday, the Cuban state news agency Prensa Latina reported.
Manuel Pineiro Losada was born on May 14, 1934, the son of the Bacardi rum representative in the province of Matanzas.
In recent years, Pineiro continued to cultivate his contacts with his former proteges in the Cuban intelligence and security apparatus and with foreign diplomats, intellectuals and journalists, many of whom remain unconvinced by his assurances that he was then out of the intelligence business.

Cuba's ex-link to Latin guerrillas dies
Manuel Piñeiro, the legendary intelligence chief who ran Cuba's campaign to provide training and weapons to leftist guerrillas throughout Latin America, died in a car accident, Cuban media announced Thursday.
Remembered by friends as a politically moderate intellectual, and by critics as a ``tormentor,'' Piñeiro, 64, was one of the last surviving historical leaders of the Cuban Revolution.
Piñeiro had one son, Manuel, with his first wife, American dancer Lorna Burdsall, who still lives in Cuba, and a daughter, Patricia, with his second wife, Chilean writer Marta Harnecker.

Asencio noted that Manuel Piñeiro was on hand at the Havana airport to officially welcome the terrorists as heroes.

 Seeing Red
In it was found an historic interview with Cuban revolutionary leader Manuel Piñiero--historic because of Piñiero^Òs tremendous stature (he was in charge of all Cuban liason with Latin American revolutionaries, and of blocking counter- revoultionary operations within Cuba--including the numerous attempts to assisinate Fidel Castro organized by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.
The reason is that Manuel Piñeiro, nicknamed "Red Beard" in the 1960s by friend and foe alike, is a key witness in reconstructing Che's entire internationalist course, from 1959 up to his murder in Bolivia in 1967.
The normal work environment of the "distinguished" individual is revealed: mounds of publications and documents on Latin America cover the furniture; at the foot of a plastic table is a lamp; there is a hammock and lush greenery in the small yard.

Andrea Salvagno of Uruguay, one of those invited to attend, was the only one who taped his replies, on her own tape recorder.
The transcription of the tape she kept and the notes taken by the editor of this book made it possible to recontruct a part of the dialogue, which was the last time Commander Manuel Piñeiro Losada spoke about Che’s Bolivian feats.
None of us who had the opportunity to be there with him in this enthusiastic recognition given by the organizers and assistants could imagine that this simple but emotion packed ceremony would go down in history as the well-deserved homage of a new generations of students to the legendary Commander Red Beard.

 Manuel Piñeiro, Castro's hit-man
This article appeared in the November 10, 1995 issue of Executive Intelligence Review.
The surfacing of Manuel Piñeiro as a leader of the São Paulo Forum constitutes, in and of itself, grounds for firing any U.S. intelligence or national security official who has argued that Fidel Castro and his Forum are no longer a threat to the security of the United States or its hemispheric allies.
For 35 years, "Redbeard" Piñeiro has served as Castro's dirty operations man for the Western Hemisphere, personally setting up and directing Cuba's assassination, kidnapping, and terror international in the region.
