  The Great Chiefs - Manuelito
In January 1861, Manuelito and other important leaders met with Canby and again agreed to try to keep the peace, even though Manuelito did not believe this was possible.
Barboncito, one of the most important leaders, was captured, but Manuelito held out until late April, hoping that he and his people would be able to remain near the fort.
Manuelito served as head chief from 1870 to 1884, when he was succeeded by Henry Chee Dodge.

Both of these congregations, being approximately 140 miles away, felt they could not properly oversee this work so in 1959 the chruch in Gallup, NM (a town in west central New Mexico, USA) was asked to take responsibility for this work.
The missionaries at Manuelito, a small community 18 miles west of Gallup, were already caring for children who were left with them by families who could not care for them.
It also seemed the adult Navajos were not accepting the gospel, so the decision was made to turn the major emphasis of the work to child care.

The award is significant for the Navajo youths and comes with a medallion depicting Chief Manuelito, who was born in the Chuska Mountains in 1818.
