Product Data Management (PDM) and Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP)
Every PDM system and MRP system will be used in a certain way by a company that uses it and it is these working methods that have to be reconciled across the PDM/MRP boundary: both systems have to have the same view of how the company's design procedures will span the gap.
The easiest way to mediate between MRP and PDM is with people: the packages never talk to each other directly, but engineers have two windows on their monitors, one for each system (the modern equivalent of two terminals on the desk).
However both MRP and PDM systems have to be programmed to understand the same staging points in the product life cycle and a new change control system put in place to ensure that any changes to the workflow rules defining this lifecycle are updated simultaneously in both systems.

Manufacturing resource planning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II) is defined by APICS as a method for the effective planning of all resources of a manufacturing company.
Ideally, it addresses operational planning in units, financial planning in dollars, and has a simulation capability to answer "what-if" questions and extension of closed-loop MRP.
Management business rules for strategic planning can be set, and enforced by MRP II.

 Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II)
MRP II includes feedback from the shop floor on how the work has progressed, to all levels of the schedule so that the next run can be updated on a regular basis.
The advantages of this development are that detailed plans can be put to the shop floor and can be reported on by operation, which offers much tighter control over the plant.
The most important is Rough Cut Capacity Planning (RCCP), an initial attempt to match the order load to the capacity available, by calculating (using a number of simplifying assumptions) the load per resource.

 Manufacturing Software: Advanced MRP Systems
Master plans are generated from forecast and on-hand demand; can be easily edited prior to conversion to lower level plans and schedules; and can accommodate both discrete and process applications.
Forecasts are generated based on data flowing from both the distribution and e-commerce modules, while manufacturing output produces data for the accounting modules.
For even more sophisticated planning, Enterprise BFP is available to provide linear modeling to optimize the entire manufacturing and distribution network.

MRP - Manufacturing Resource Planning, Material Requirement Planning
Manufacturing Resource Planning is not the only word formed from MRP.
MRP uses the bill of materials from the engineering drawings or CAD techniques such as attribute assignments.
MRP has evolved into material resource planning, which includes both materials and financing.

MRPII Consultant - Management Training UK Article
The management of recommended planning actions could be assisted by system facilities to report the number of messages outstanding, but they recognised that the real issue here was to educate people in the essentials of the approach.
Material Requirements Planning had moved on to be the planning engine within the much broader approach of Manufacturing Resource Planning.
MRPII in itself is still viewed by many companies as an essential element of proper management of the planning of manufacturing and the execution of those plans.

Booklet on MRPII - Manufacturing Resource Planning   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Material Requirements Planning (MRP) was developed during the 1970s as a computerised technique for exploding finished product plans into schedules for components and materials.
It is the framework of today’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Supply Chain systems and is a ‘system’ in the broadest sense of the word.
A plan is what we intend to do rather than what we would have liked to do had the world turned out differently.

You don't have have MRP knowledge or experience to read this book but being from a manufacturing background is extremely helpful.
The extensive coverage of every aspect of manufacturing planning and control, such as pegging, back-flushing, phantom BOMs, etc. makes this book the indispensable companion for any manufacturing professional, whether the user of the manufacturing module of ERP or an implementer.
Because this book covers manufacturing right from strategic planning level to the shop floor, it helps as a primer as well as advanced reference not just for ERP users/implementers but also for SCM learners and practitioners.

BPIC - the manufacturing planning and control resource for companies using ERP or MRPII systems
Help manufacturing companies to improve their business performance through better planning and control, in particular, better use of ERP systems.
In survey after survey of both software implementers and users, the reason companies say they failed to get the return they expected from their enterprise resource planning (ERP) system was a lack of education both in the functionality of the software and the way to integrate the software with the business processes.
If you do not spend around 20% of the total implementation budget on upfront education, in-project change management, software training and post implementation monitoring and re-training, you are almost certainly in the ranks of the 80% of companies whose new software delivers a negative return on the investment.
