The Clutha River is the second longest river in New Zealand and flows south-southeast for 340 kilometres through Central and South Otago to the Pacific Ocean, 75 kilometres south west of Dunedin.
The ultimate source of the river is at the end of the Makarora River, close to the saddle of the Haast Pass, which flows into the northern end of Lake Wanaka.
The river then flows southeast through the scenic Cromwell Gorge to Clyde and nearby Alexandra, where it is joined by the waters of the Manuherikia River.

Manuherikia River's Shaky Bridge in New Zealand is a historical suspension bridge originally built for the early gold rush in Central Otago.
Before it was built, the only way across the Manuherikia River was by punt - a risky operation when the river was high.
The bridge was opened in 1879 at a cost of £974 ($1,949) and was later sold for £1 ($2.00) to two settlers living across the river.

From Alexandra, the trail crosses the Manuherikia River and passes through the old Tucker Hill gold diggings - so named because the diggings weren’t rich but could be relied upon to provide enough money for basic necessities.

During its first season the new loose gravel made this a hard ride, but now after 2 seasons and the occassional flood, the surface has improved no end and makes this a very enjoyable ride.
Starting in Alexandra, cross the Manuherikia River at the historic Shaky Bridge then turn right and continue along the road to Graveyard Gully.
Turn off Tarbert Street right into Little Valley Road, then as you cross the bridge over the Manuherikia River, look out for the first marker as you turn left onto the rail trail.

At Waihemo, some 30 kilometres before Palmerston, a side-road leads south to Macraes Flat, considered remarkable by reptile researchers for the six species of one genus of lizard that can be found living here in one small area - the only place in the world this occurs.
