It connects with the Douglas Horse Tram at its southern terminus at Derby Castle in Douglas, and with the Snaefell Mountain Railway at Laxey.
The Manx Electric Railway was sold by the liquidator to the newly formed Manx Electric Railway Co. Ltd.

The Snaefell Mountain Railway is an electric mountain railway connecting the town of Laxey with the summit of Snaefell which is, at 2036 feet (620.6 m) above sea level, the highest point on the Isle of Man.
Snaefell Mountain Railway vehicles are occasionally worked to the Manx Electric Railway workshops at Douglas by swapping their bogies, and to aid this there is a dual gauge siding in Laxey.
The Snaefell Mountain Railway and the Manx Electric Railway were sold by the liquidator to the newly formed Manx Electric Railway Co. Ltd.

Adding further to MER’s uniqueness is the fact that many of the line’s Douglas (the capital and most important town on the Isle of Man) riders use the Douglas Horse Tramway to connect with the company’s electric cars.
Electric traction in 1893 was in its infancy.
Today, the mountain railway and the Laxey Wheel, or "Lady Isabella" as it is known, attracts thousands of people each year-- most whom arrive via MER, often by "extra cars." The wheel -- the largest water wheel in the world -- was designed to pump the surplus water from the mines.

Like most of the Island's railways the MER still operates with original rolling stock - the newest dating from 1906, and the origianl tramcars 1 and 2 dating back to the opening days of 1893.

The Manx Electric Railway is one of Britain's longest vintage narrow gauge lines, and runs from Douglas to Ramsey.
The Manx Electric Railway Station (known as Derby Castle) is at the Northern end of the promenade.
The railway, a quarter of a mile in length, runs up the valley from the former Washing Floors, now the Valley Gardens, to the main adit entrance where there is a picnic site, footpath and information boards explaining the mining features.

It seems extraordinary that in 1893, when few European cities had \line electric tramways and such British electric cars as existed were mainly small four-wheelers, the remote Isle of Man was installing large bogie cars with trailers.
It is seen bearing the first name of the line before the Manx Electric took over, and with its original -and unsatisfactory- rigid bow collectors.
This particular tram was burnt out in 1930, but the two others (Nos 1 and 2) survive today as probably the oldest electric cars in the world working on their original route.

At Laxey (Laksaa), the largest town between Douglas and Ramsey, passengers may transfer from the MER to the Snaefell Mountain Railway, to travel four miles to the summit of the 2036-foot high mountain.
In Douglas, most of the distance between the MER terminus and the Isle Man Steam Railway can be covered on Douglas' horsecars, which have a common 3-foot gauge with the MER.

No 19 was built by G.F. Milnes in 1899 and is one of the four newest closed cars on the line.
Seating 48 they are termed the 'winter saloons' and have run throughout the y ear for much the MER's history.
A 60cm-gauge tourist line, the Groudle Glen Railway, ran around the gorse-covered headland in the mid background from 1896 until 1962 (with wartime intermissions) and was rebuilt and reopened by enthusiasts in 1983.

Based on a recommendation from Blackpool Transport we were contacted by the I.O.M Tramway and subsequently we supplied a Mitsubishi Z300 5.5KW inverter and Mitsubishi Electric FX programmable controller for the light sequencing.
Again, the Mitsubishi Electric Range of Fx Programmable Logic controllers were employed for this application.
