The western stream flows westwards, with an inclination northwards, until it reaches the Don, though when the latter river is running high, its water penetrates some 60 miles up the Manych.
The eastern stream dies away in the sandy steppe about 25 miles from the Caspian, though it is said sometimes to reach the Kuma through the Huiduk, a tributary of the Kuma.
By some authorities the Manych depression is taken as part of the boundary between Europe and Asia.

The Western Manych, c.200 mi (320 km) long, rises near Stavropol in the N Caucasus and flows NW through Lake Manych-Gudilo into the lower Don River.
The Eastern Manych rises in a marshy area and flows c.100 mi (160 km) east to a system of salt lakes and marshes c.75 mi (120 km) W of the Caspian Sea, but it reaches the sea only in rare spring floods.
In spring the Western and Eastern Manych join in the center of the Manych Depression, a broad, valleylike lowland extending c.350 mi (560 km) southeast from the lower Don to the Caspian Sea.

The reservoir cut off Vodny from the mainland, and though owners tried to collect their horses, the animals kept returning to the island to graze on the lush grasses.
The sections of the reserve (Ostrovnoy, Starikovsky, Krasny Partizansky, and Tsagan-khag), separated by 5-25 kilometers, are islands in the Manych-Gudilo Reservoir or adjacent lands.
The reservoir was created in 1953 with the damming of the Manych River, which once connected the Azov and Caspian seas.

 USGS Bulletin 2201-A: Petroleum Geology and Resources of the Middle Caspian Basin, Former Soviet Union
The basin was formed on the Hercynian accreted terrane during Late Permian–Triassic through Quaternary time.
Structurally, the basin consists of the fold-and-thrust zone of the northern Caucasus foothills, the foredeep and foreland slope, the Stavropol-Prikumsk uplift and East Manych trough to the north of the slope, and the South Mangyshlak subbasin and slope of the Karabogaz arch east of the Caspian Sea.
Four total petroleum systems (TPS) have been identified in the basin.
