In stage manzai, the tayu came to be called tsukkomi, meaning "ribber" or "poker", and the saizo was known as the boke, meaning absent-minded or stupid.
Since the visual dimensions of manzai such as gesturing, expressions, and other physical humor could not be transmitted through the radio, this became an opportunity for manzai to fine-tune its language, develop new ways of playing with words, and to improve the art of narrative-based or shabekuri manzai.
In manzai theaters, however, the symbol of radio broadcasting which was the microphone served, on the contrary, to improve the use of body language.

Manzai - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Manzai (漫才) is a style of stand-up comedy in Japan, which usually involves two performers—a straight man (tsukkomi) and a funny man (boke)—trading jokes at great speed.
In recent times, manzai has often been associated with the Osaka region, and manzai comedians often speak in the Kansai dialect during their acts.
The two manzai performers came with messages from the gods and this was worked into a standup routine, with one performer showing some sort of opposition to the word of the other.

 Anime News Network - Manzai
A manzai routine consists of two partners, a tsukkomi and a boke.
The routine is straighforwardly slapstick in nature: the boke says something stupid, and the tsukkomi delivers a verbal reprimand, or a blow of some form (either a slap, or a blow with a harisen, a fan-like whip made of pleated paper), or both.
Among the more famous manzai comedians is Takeshi Kitano, who used to tour as part of a manzai team, under the stage name "Beat".

MANZAI, Osaka Tourist Information and Travel Guide at InfoHub.com
Manzai, a comic form of storytelling told by a duo, is performed all over Japan, though it is strongly associated with the Kansai region, and Osaka in particular.
Kansai manzai duos have dominated TV comedy shows since the early 1980s: the duo known as Downtown (Matsumoto Hitoshi and Hamada Masatoshi) are two of the most famous entertainers in Japan, and certainly the most famous Japanese comedy duo of the 1990s.
Though they have now been overtaken by the equally long-running comedy duo Tunnels as the highest-paid entertainers in the land, Downtown remain the funniest comedians on the nation's TV screens - making it all the more pleasing for true Osakans that the pair are local lads.

A more intimate form of Japanese dance, designed for performance in a relatively small space and to be seen at close range, was developed from the mid-eighteenth century onward by professional female entertainers known as geisha and may be seen today in such forms as kyomai.
