This music is closely tied to traditional Maori customs and life and particular song genres accompany particular events, rituals, processes or festivals - waiata tangi are laments associated with funerals; hari kai are food-bearing songs; waiata tohutohu are songs of instruction.
Obviously, all the music is sung in Maori.
As with previous recordings, part of the impetus for this expedition was the fear by many, both Maori and Pakeha, that although song-texts existed in their thousands, the song tunes were in danger of being forever lost as older singers passed away.

One of the real signs of progress in language revival for us has been the composition of new songs by a group of students who have now formed themselves into a Maori language pop band.
One of the things I think is important is that every student have a slip of paper on them to explain that they are attending an immersion course that week, that they are not to speak English, and that they thank the non-Maori speaking person for their tolerance and cooperation.
I initially thought that a total immersion program where only Maori was going to be spoken and English banned was "a bloody stupid idea." I was unsure as to whether it was going to work, and I did not know how I could survive in an all Maori environment.

The Maori themselves claime that their nowadays music is their authentic contemporary music and they don't want to be stuck to a historical classification, we westeners impose upon them.
Many new 'old forms' of songs and recitatives are composed and it even seems now, that new, so called traditional, instruments are invented and added to the list of already existing and rediscovered aerophones and idiophones.
But in the case of the Maori we would prefer to be more nuanced, because we see next to the commercialisation a strong revival of the traditional Maori music too.
