During this period the acquisition of muskets by those tribes in close contact with European visitors destabilised the existing balance of power between Māori tribes, and there was a period of bloody inter-tribal warfare, known as the Musket Wars, during which several tribes were effectively exterminated and others were driven from their traditional territory.

The so-called 'Great Fleet' scenario of Māori migration, which originated with Europeans (including S. Percy Smith) in the 19th century, was discredited by the research of David Simmons and others in the 1960s.
The concept, by a process called 'tradition feedback' was accepted as correct by some iwi groups and became the subject of songs and chants; influential Māori scholars including Te Rangi Hiroa (Sir Peter Buck) (1877-1951) also unwittingly promoted the idea.
(The more general term used instead of 'tribes' is now iwi.
