Map design - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Map design concerns the design of maps, abstract objects used to represent real places and things by use of symbolization.
Arthur H. Robinson, an American cartographer, says if the map is not properly designed "it will be a cartographic failure." He also claims, when considering all aspects of cartography, "map design is perhaps the most complex." (1953, pp.
The intent of the map should be illustrated in a manner in which the percipient acknowledges its purpose in a timely fashion.

Map - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pre-modern maps, and mapping traditions outside the Western tradition, often merge geography with non-scientific cosmography, showing the relationship of the viewer to the universe.
For example, maps designed for the hiker are often scaled at the ratio 1:24,000, meaning that 1 of any unit of measurement on the map corresponds to 24,000 of that same unit in reality; while maps designed for the motorist are often scaled at 1:250,000.
Maps that depict the surface of the Earth also use a projection, a way of translating the three-dimensional real surface of the geoid to a two-dimensional picture.

 Map Design
Design decisions are made by committees who have the responsibility to ensure that any changes in feature representation or symbolization are consistent with required accuracy standards and are acceptable to the user community.
Concpetual clarity is translated into the graphic design of the map through careful selection of important information, elimination of unnecessary detail, and inclusion of a legend that identifies the intended meaning of all symbols used on the map.
Maps often must be designed to fit the page size and shape requirements of the publications in which they are to appear.

Another solution is to routinely map individual precincts or districts under the assumption that the managers of those areas are first and foremost interested in seeing patterns in their areas of responsibility.
It is tempting to overload crime maps with warm colors, such as red and orange, but the analyst should be mindful of the symbolic effect and the impact this may have on the intended audience.
The use of color in maps and graphics is complicated by the fact that a significant portion (8 percent of males and 0.5 percent of females) of the population is at least partially colorblind.

Aspects of Web map design in practice
Their design should be based upon the nature and required perception of the data to be visualised.
In principle the map design process is a rather straightforward intellectual process consisting of a series of steps beginning with an analysis of the type of information to be presented and ending with the evaluation of the effectiveness of the designed map.
Many map designers just ignore this problem and simply choose pale colours from a larger palette, in the hope that the users also will be able to display this larger palette.

 Map design, color, and visualization
Good graphic design consists of many aspects, which can be summarized as a "pleasing appearance" that is easy to interpret without visual clutter or confusion.
Maps are easiest to interpret when the number of colors does not exceed 10 to 12.
Common physiographic maps are a good example: blue = water bodies, green = vegetation, brown = desert/mountains, white = ice or snow, etc. A standard color scheme is often used on geological maps: green = Cretaceous, yellow = Quaternary, etc. Such color schemes are often varied to suit the local circumstances.

Level Design   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
As you are designing the level, don't try to imagine highly specific situations that will happen in combat on the level, that is, imagining the actual positions of players and the items they may have.
Map knowledge is at best something that all players must learn in order to compete evenly in deeper skills, at worst, the determiner of outcome when some players don't know a map perfectly.
It should be made very easy to determine where you are in a map, not on the basis of (potentially absent) items, but on the basis of cues like texturing and structures unique to a particular area of a map.

 Guide to Map Projection Page
As a student of cartography and a participant of a seminar on map projections it became clear that the characteristics, construction, and most importantly, use of map projections were being neglected in the face of thematic map design and advances in computer cartography.
In an order to test the hypothesis that map projection concepts were being neglected 29 cartography texts were reviewed based on their coverage of the subject of map projections.
The text is a very readable one, focusing primarily on thematic map design, and not a very detailed source for projections or other technical subjects of cartography.

An image map is a single graphic image that allows users to access different web pages by clicking on different areas of the graphic image.
An image map tends to be a rather large graphic image, both in K and in dimension (length and width), significantly increasing the download time of your web pages.
Thus, if you do choose to use an image map on your web pages, we recommend that you use text-based links both for search engine indexing, for users of text-based browsers, and for people who turn off the graphic images in their browsers.

 Site Map Usability Guidelines
A site map's main benefit is to give users an overview of the site's areas in a single glance by dedicating an entire page to a visualization of the information architecture.
If designed well, this overview can include several levels of hierarchy, and yet not get so big that users lose their ability to grasp the map as a whole.
It is safest to score your design against a checklist of usability guidelines to make sure you don't do anything wrong.
