Although not the first rag written or published, Maple Leaf Rag did become the first instrumental piece to sell over one million copies.
The rag was named by Joplin in honor of the venue in which it was allegedly first heard by publisher John Stark, the Maple Leaf Club in Sedalia, Missouri.
The original Maple Leaf Club was actually a social club that met in a saloon run by the Williams brothers, who by some reports may have come from Canada, thus the name.

Perfessor Bill Edwards - Scott Joplin Compositions (1895-1905)
Most of the rag was known to have been composed by Hayden, particularly the difficult A and D sections, while Joplin contributed the trio and a few other thematic touches.
While the bulk of the rag is Hayden's, the trio is likely by Joplin, who also influenced the D section with anticipatory syncopations, or chords played just ahead of and held over the bar line.
It also was the first rag he sold to a Chicago publisher, providing a new distribution base as well as a fresh audience for his works, which had already reached far by reputation.

Eye - The Maple Leaf Rag - 02.08.01
Although it lacked the punchy alliteration of "red rag," Landry's actual statement was, as you might expect from a cranky intellectual, draped in a number of allusions and connotations.
The Canadian Press held firm to its copy of the Robert-Collins Dictionary, which translates "chiffon" as "rag." But, as Mike Duffy fans know, "chiffon" also means "cloth" and, by an extension not dissimilar to the English, a cloth becomes a flag.
Thus the common French expression "chiffon blanc" (the white flag of surrender) and "chiffon rouge," which, as Landry fruitlessly pointed out, refers to the red cloth that is used to enrage a bull.

The words "rag" and "ragtime" were added to record titles and record catalogs in the summer of 1898.
William Krell's "Mississippi Rag" was the first published instrumental rag (January 1897) and later that year the first instrumental rag by an African-American composer was published, Tom Turpin's "Harlem Rag." I stress "instrumental" here since vocal rags were published in 1896.
"Maple Leaf Rag" was genuinely popular in concerts (it was played by bands) and in homes (it sold well as sheet music) but was not popular on records--still, it was recorded eight times during Joplin's life, with "Wall Street Rag" and "Gladiolus Rag" being the other Joplin tunes recorded before his death.

In the 1940s, a group of jazz musicians seeking to revitalize their art with the spirit of the past, included ragtime in their development of “traditional jazz.”; This inspired a “ragtime revival,” and though it was slight, it continued to slowly gain adherents.

BOOK REVIEW of Edward A. Berlin's King of Ragtime -- Scott Joplin and His Era   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The fact that "Maple Leaf" was recorded eight times in Joplin's life confirms that it was genuinely popular, but I wish Berlin had mentioned that not one of these recordings sold well.
I suppose two candidates are "Wall Street Rag" and "Gladiolus Rag" since these were the only compositions aside from "Maple Leaf Rag" to be recorded by ensembles during Joplin's lifetime.
Berlin notes that Joplin may have added this to sheet music because "Maple Leaf Rag" was used by pianists as a "virtuoso showcase." Nonetheless, Joplin was bold to make this sweeping statement about ragtime, and I wonder if it had any weight with his contemporaries.
