IGN: Mappy (Famicom Mini Series) Review
Mappy is a unique concept, just like many of Namco's classic arcade games of the early 80s.
Namco's Mappy can still hold its own with other 80s classics, and the NES version mirrored the arcade version very, very closely...a testament to the capability of Nintendo's home system compared to Namco's arcade hardware.
Mappy is still incredibly fun and unique to this day, but on the GBA it feels like it should be part of a collection and not as a standalone game.

Mappy (Famicom Mini) review 1UP - Find Articles
As the perpetrators responsible are cats, it's obviously a very bad idea to run into them; Mappy has to evade them by dodging through their maze-like multi-story hideout.
For some reason, the cats have placed trampolines at the bottom of gaps in their hideout's floors, and to move to a different level of the maze you need to drop down a shaft and bounce upward to your intended floor.
Mappy is frankly much more interesting as a historical curiosity than as a video game.

On the Mappy board location 4L - 74ls174 - controls sprite selection, it's uses a 5 bit value D2 - D6 for sprite number, low bits 0,1 are passed directly to custom IC 12xx.

With the arcade cabinet's positively mammoth marquee, and the hint that Mappy was the star of this game and would presumably star in future games, one wonders if the American distributors of Pac-Man were perhaps just a little too certain that everything coming out of their plants would be the dawn of a new franchise.
It's not that Mappy wasn't just simply adorable, but it was a hard game to get a strategic handle on.
