These newer sites are free, like MapQuest, but they offer some fancy features, like the ability to pan across a map simply by moving your mouse's cursor, or zooming in or out on a location quickly.
MapQuest looks a little dowdy by comparison to the newcomers, but it works for a lot of folks because it gets people from point A to point B, without any extra fuss.
MapQuest uses capitalized letters for street names and directions, such as, "Turn RIGHT onto OCEAN VIEW PKWY," and prints the mileage for each line of directions aligned on the right side of the page, making it easy to find how far you must travel for each step.

With Mapquest (and Yahoo Maps which is powered by Mapquest), all you need to do is type in the starting address and the ending address and you are given turn by turn directions.
In my opinion and experience, MapQuest gives good driving directions when you don’t know the area/location at all, but not so good when you find all the “indirect and long ways” to get to your destination.
MapQuest is better than Yahoo maps b/c it bothers to tell you the Exit #s off the highway.

I once begged to differ, as their greatest asset was the fact you could blow up the map to a large size and view aerial shots.
It was this very unique tool that made them stand out, a necessity that separated them from the others...although now they've done away with this, and even I have to admit their site is all but useless.
I thought Mapquest did away with the aerial view because of the possible use by terrorist.
