Four years ago, residents of the Moamba district in Maputo province were subsistence farmers living on the fertile belt between the Incomati and Sabie rivers.
In Maputo province people allege that neighbouring South Africa is reluctant to share the water of the Incomati.

In 2000 Mozambique suffered its worst floods in 50 years, when torrential rains brought by cyclone Eline affected the three southern provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane, and the central province of Sofala.
So far, the GEF has approved proposals from five community-based groups (CBO): three in Maputo province, one in the southern province of Gaza and one in the central province of Manica.
One of the CBOs chosen is the Malengane community group in Maputo province, consisting of between 30 and 50 families.

A total of 4 301 cases and 146 deaths (3.4%) had been notified up to 25 November in Maputo City, other areas of Maputo Province and Xai-Xai City in Gaza Province, of which 2 637 cases were registered since 7 November.
Maputo City continues to be the most affected area with 92% of all cases reported.
Three suspect cases and one death were notified in Chokwe district in the same province on 24 November.

Survey results suggest that Glossina brevipalpis is mainly concentrated in dense vegetation along the Maputo River and in the wetlands east of the river.

MAPUTO, 27 January 2004 — With the cholera outbreak in Mozambique affecting more and more people, UNICEF has intensified its support to the affected locations in close collaboration with the local authorities, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and NGOs.
UNICEF is supporting the door-to-door information campaign by activists in Maputo City, the provision of posters on cholera prevention and their dissemination in the schools of the capital,” UNICEF Representative Marie-Pierre Poirier said on Tuesday.
Maputo City reports the highest number of cases: its Cholera Treatment Centre in Mavalane received more than 500 new patients over the weekend.

MAPUTO, 19 DECEMBER (SARDC) - The final results of the second municipal elections held in 33 Mozambican municipalities on 19 November and announced in mid-December, confirmed the victory of the ruling party, FRELIMO.
According to final results, FRELIMO scored significant victories in Maputo city (the capital), Matola, Manhica, Xai-Xai, Chokwe, Manjacaze, Chibuto, Maxixe, Inhambane and Vilanculos, in the southern provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane, and in Dondo, Chimoio, Manica, Catandica, Tete, Moatize, Quelimane, Mocuba, Gurue and Milange, in the central provinces of Sofala, Manica, Tete and Zambezia.
JPC (Together for the City) in Maputo City won five seats, "Union for Change" and "united for the Island" won one seat each, in Gurue and Mozambique Island respectively.

I first visited Maputo in 1990 when the war was still on and Maputo was poor and dilapidated; now the city is busier and richer - it looks as though it is flourishing.
Maputo is near South Africa, a very big monster - in the positive sense - and this brings something to the south compared with the centre and the north of the country.
If you take the province as a whole, the roads are really very bad, electricity is a problem in Sofala, water quality also is a problem; and also you must try to create conditions in Beira city that will attract investments.

This survey was initiated to determine the species spectrum of ticks infesting domestic dogs in and around the city of Maputo as well as further afield in Mozambique, and whether there were differences in the species composition of the tick burdens of dogs in the city compared to those of dogs at rural settlements.
Ticks were collected from 58 dogs in households in eight suburbs of the city of Maputo, and 16 collections were taken from dogs that were allowed to roam freely at three rural settlements around Maputo.
Dogs in three suburbs of the city of Maputo and also at rural settlements in Maputo and other provinces were infested with H. leachi, and dogs at Boane, Goba, the Matthews' homestead and at Luala with Haemaphysalis spinulosa.

ACT/Christian Council of Mozambique (CCM) reports that Maputo city and some areas of Maputo province are under siege of an endemic cholera outbreak and the Health authorities have declared "a general alert" in an unprecedented move in the recent history of this city.
Apart from the inadequacy of facilities, Maputo Central Hospital which is the largest and most well equipped in the country, is also facing shortage of medical staff, beds and medicines especially IV fluids (drips) and rehydration salts.

From 1 January to 15 June 2003, Maputo province registered 4124 cases with 31 deaths, with the number of cases now declining.
The peak of the outbreak in Maputo province and Maputo city occurred at the same time as a cholera outbreak began in Mpumalanga province, South Africa.
WHO is assisting the national health authorities in Sofala and Gaza provinces to control the cholera outbreaks.
