  Maquinna
Maquinna was the ranking leader of the Moachat group of Nootka Sound Indians on the west coast of Vancouver Island during the early years of European contact.
Maquinna controlled the FUR TRADE and emerged as the dominant Indian leader in the Sound, operating as a middleman.
While Maquinna had achieved his position among the NOOTKA by traditional means, he was a leader whose role was changing because of the Europeans' impact.

Secondly, Maquinna's principal companion in the operation of the fur trade, his kinsman, secondary Chief Callicum, was senselessly murdered when he came to the Cove to berate Martinez for the seizure of Colnett and his ships.
Maquinna was later to complain to Malaspina that he "attributed his...thin state to a scarcity of food since he had been forced to abandon Yuquot and...reminisced, with pride and not without sorrow about the happy times in which, alone, he dared to harpoon a whale when he enjoyed health and an uncommon robustness."
The expedition's diplomatic success with Maquinna and the other chiefs of Nootka Sound was an integral part of the road that led away from the disaster of the Callicum murder to Maquinna dining in the role of honoured guest at Bodega's table in the Commandant's House.

Maquinna only has one dog so he didn't have that luxury, but he has been doing this every year so he is used to enduring this long walk across the sea ice with his sled behind him.
Maquinna also took a sled with him so he could use it to transport the seal once he caught one, but sometimes he would leave the sled at the camp and just drag the seal behind him without a sled if he catches one.
Maquinna places the harpoon head that he caught the seal with next to a lamp, since the Inuit believed that the soul of the seal lies in the harpoon head that kills it, and thus they should ensure the soul of the seal stays warm through the night.
